RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted April 8, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) I stared this one a couple of years ago and then stopped. The chassis utilises the MTK pressed aluminium sheet base with their plastic trusses and white metal equipment parts. The bogies are from Phoenix white metal kits. They run well but are a bit chunky. I may replace them with Hornby 2-BIL bogies. The trailer coach is yet to be built... Cheers Darius Edited February 27, 2023 by Darius43
RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted April 8, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2020 Sorry to be a pedant but it was formed from an ex 4-LAV one of the two Bulleid versions as per the cover of one of latest titles. Kevin

Kevin Hi Kevin, In which case what is this then? 2-HAL de-icer Digging deeper I see that it is a HAL/LAV hybrid - so we are both half right (or half wrong depending on your outlook). Still, at least you got to plug your book. Cheers Darius
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted April 8, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) According to 'Southern Region Multiple Unit Trains' by G Beecroft and B Rayner, published by the Southern Electric Group - on page 101 referring to De-Icing units 001 and 002 (which was renumbered from unit 003), and by implication the original unit 002 when it was first formed; "Both units comprise a pair of 2 Hal or 4 Lav motor coaches". The formation at the time of writing was; Unit 001 ADS 70268 (ex 10726) + ADS 70273 (ex 10500) Unit 002 ADS 70270 (ex 10497) + ADS 70272 (ex10499) HTH Edited April 8, 2020 by 4630 To add unit formation

RMweb Gold 4630 Posted April 8, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2020 I've posted this image on RMweb before but in case it's of any help, here is ADS 70272 of unit 002 at Bournemouth T&RSMD.
RMweb Gold 4630 Posted April 8, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2020 I've also referred to Southern Electric, A New History by David Brown, published by Capital Transport - page 184. This gives the original formations as; Unit 001 DS 70268 (ex 10726 from 2 Hal 2608) + DS 70273 (ex 10500 from 4 Lav 2955) Unit 002 DS 70269 (ex 10764 from 4 Lav 2926) + DS 70271 (ex 10498 from 4 Lav 2954) Unit 003 DS 70270 (ex 10497 from 4 Lav 2954) + DS 70272 (ex 10499 from 4 Lav 2955) There's also another picture of 002 on page 185.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted April 8, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2020 (edited) Cab front cleaned up and window apertures tidied up. Cast buffer beam removed - to be replaced by a plasticard version. To my eye, cast in place cab front pipework and jumper cables never look good even with the steadiest painting so these will be added separately. RMweb Gold Strathwood Posted April 8, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted April 8, 2020 If both coaches are with the porthole style of windows and the doors arrangement you are limited to 002 and 003 and the ex 4-LAV units, just to plug the books a little further here is a clearer shot of 003 from Volume I. also used on the original MTK box. Have a look at the superb https://www.bloodandcustard.com/SR-4LAV.html 2954 Unit damaged by enemy action (location unknown, probably New Cross Gate) Jul‑44. Unit withdrawn May‑68. Both motor coaches to Stewarts Lane for conversion to departmental use. Trailers 11999 and 11534 both stored at Micheldever and held for possible conversion as part of an Instruction Train and later for possible trailers to make‑up the two Stores units to four coaches. However neither of these projects were carried out and they were both sent for scrapping to G. Cohen, Kettering Mar‑75. MBS 10498 converted to De‑Icing motor DS70271 and to unit 002 18‑Oct‑68, 10497 becoming DS70270 for unit 003 8‑Feb‑69. 2955 Unit in depot collision with 3023 at Lovers Walk 13‑Nov‑63 and MBS 10500 damaged and repaired at Lancing. Unit withdrawn 15‑Jun‑68. Both motor coaches to Stewarts Lane for conversion to departmental use. Trailers 12000 and 11535 both stored at Micheldever and held for possible conversion as part of an Instruction Train and later for possible trailers to make‑up the two Stores units to four coaches. However neither of these projects were carried out and they were both sent for scrapping to T. W. Ward Ltd, Briton Ferry, moving 4‑Jul‑72. MBS 10499 converted to De‑Icing motor DS70272 8‑Feb-69 and to unit 003. MBS 10500 also converted to De‑Icing motor DS70273 17‑Sep‑69 and to unit 001. As far as I am concerned your posts fall into the latter category. Some folk are also polite enough to refer to me by name in their communication. Dave, Happy for you and anyone else to post pictures and stories of MTK/EMU kits on this thread. What irked me (perhaps unreasonably) is someone trying to sell their products in the guise of being helpful. dasatcopthorne
OK. I'll look up some photos. Warning. These were built mostly in the 70s & 80s and my photography wasn't that good at the time. Dave

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted April 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted April 9, 2020 (edited) Dave, Wonderful stuff!!! Your first photo (in b&w) reminds me of a layout based on Selhurst and East Croydon by Peter Moore, which was featured in a model railway book that I have had since the early 1980s.
