2-HAL De-Icer

Recommended Posts

Darius.

Just found this shot.

I took it at Selhurst some time. The bogie is under the one time Ex 4Sub de-icing trailer.

It looks to me that they may have fitted the same to the ex-Hal de-icers or even took them off the 2Hal de-icers ans put them under the ex-Sub coach.

Anyway. Thought it might be interesting.

As I was modelling EMUs like mad at the time, I made a point of going round taking pics of the stuff you don't usually see pics of. Bogies, underframes and roofs.

I've also referred to Southern Electric, A New History by David Brown, published by Capital Transport - page 184.  This gives the original formations as;

Unit 001 DS 70268 (ex 10726 from 2 Hal 2608) + DS 70273 (ex 10500 from 4 Lav 2955)

Unit 002 DS 70269 (ex 10764 from 4 Lav 2926) + DS 70271 (ex 10498 from 4 Lav 2954)

Unit 003 DS 70270 (ex 10497 from 4 Lav 2954) + DS 70272 (ex 10499 from 4 Lav 2955)

There's also another picture of 002 on page 185.

4-LAV units 2954 and 2955 were the pair that weren't built until 1939 and thus were built in 2-HAL style, the two motor coaches being all but identical to 2-HAL motors. Furthermore 10764 from 4-LAV 2926 was a post-accident damage substitution in that unit and had originally been a 2-HAL motor (in unit 2646 ?). Thus all six motor coaches used in these three de-icing units were built to the original 2-HAL specification.

Darius,

Thanks for the chassis pics - You have solved a question I have had for 25 years with a almost started 124 unit - I thought the chassis folding was wrong - but never thought of it as that way up and a plasticard bottom to hold the side frames . Will you put a nut and bolt through the bogie upstands? I imagine super glue and al section makes a weak join in time and if knocked will break off ? - unless you have some supppper super glue , what brand please?

Sadly with lockdown my 124 is 150 miles away in family pile of rocks /cave in the TLC of Wales.

regards

Robert

Hi Robert,

You make a good point re the motor box housing joint to the aluminium chassis.  Once the glue has cured I will drill a few holes for steel pins (snipped track pins) to be inserted as “shear keys”.  There is not enough space for a nut and bolt.

Sorry to hear that you are separated from your MTK 124 - got one of those in the stash as well.

Cheers

Darius

Work started on the second coach body.  MTK cast end pieces fitted.  The non-driving end needed quite a bit of filing and filling to get into position.  Symmetry and good fit are just something that other kits have when it comes to MTK.

The cast white metal cab roof is a particularly good fit as you can see.

Cab roof casting re-profiled to match the coach body perimeter, fixed in place and blended in with filler.

Thanks Colin.

I have some alphabet decals on the way to make the “MEs” and “De-icing unit” titles for the coach sides.  The MTK bodies do bulge in places when viewed in sunlight but overall I am pleased with the result.

I have an MTK 2-HAL stores unit in the lockdown pile...

Cheers

Fantastic, iv seen MTK kits and always stayed away from them but they can scrub up well with a lot of filler and effort as you have shown! My dads a big EMU fan so i may take the plunge  one day and pick one up and do one for him. Great work as ever Darius.

All the best

James

Finally finished.  “De-Icing” lettering courtesy of Fox Transfers alphabet decals applied one letter at at time.   Light weathering applied to chassis.
