This layout topic will show the work to build the stock & scenics of a new 00 gauge layout, Inchyra Mill.

Construction of boards & buildings is moving ahead by my dad @Upthedale . I bring my painting & weathering skills for both buildings and rolling stock

The layout is based around a paper mill in East Scotland with inspiration taken from the Tullis Russell mill at Auchmuty & Glenrothes. Served by the Leslie branch, the short trip workings from Thornton Junction are perfect for small layouts.

There are great research archives available giving us typical buildings, road & waterways.

3 Baseboards have been formed with plywood, each being 3” by 2”. Some landscape relief is incorporated with river channels and a raised embankment. The fiddle Yard from Harkness will be adapted to service both layouts.

We have used C&L for plain track. All points are handbuilt with exactoscale chairs on plywood sleepers . Brass pins have been added in certain sleepers on points to provide solidity, rather than just relying on the glued plastic chairs. Point motors are Tortoise.

Wiring has been completed and everything test run before track was painted.

As with all of our layouts, we aim to give the operator a purpose and Inchyra Mill will be no different. At the front is the BR exchange sidings sitting a touch higher than the Mill. The internal network will service 3 key installations, the power station (coal), the processing mill (China clay and esparto grass inbound and finished product outbound, and a chemicals building for Caustic Soda. A busy and occupied operator should equal an interesting layout to view.

In addition, for viewing interest We are experimenting with the Faller Car system for the first time.

The first building constructed is the chemicals building. Totally clad is asbestos cement sheet, this is formed from styrene sheet overlaid with corrugated sheet.

I used my normal asbestos cement colour- Rail Grey. This is Railmatch enamel from an aerosol.

I have a range of reference photos to work in, some from my work (see below), some from the web

https://flic.kr/p/fPeZQk

Based on those images, weathering is a mix of dry brushed frame dirt and MIG weathering powders. Stains and mould are dappled on using MIG washes. Final coat is Testors Dullcote.

The Asbestos cement gutter & downpipes are added last, made of Plastruct rod & section with masking tape for collars.

Next up are the first brick buildings. Two are scratch built representations of the pump / water intake building which transfer water from the mill pond into the power station & processing plant. the third is a RTR resin cast gatehouse. The pump

buildings use South East Finecast embossed sheet, it is very crisp with great definition.

In addition, there is a Walthers plastic chimney, now mounted on an octagonal base plinth.

All have been painted in a colour palette as close to the Glenrothes mill as I could manage. This is achieved by applying several layers of colour. A base coat of Railmatch rail grey to provide the mortar course contrast. Then an orange layer dry brushed followed by varying shades of yellow, red, bauxite and stone. Matching the prototype, individual bricks are picked out in darker shades of brown & dark grey. Lintels are picked out in a dirty concrete. After a coat of Testors Dullcote, final weathering with MIG powders takes place to tone everything down.

Part of the fun of new layouts is the reasearch. Neither of us has working a paper mill so researching the raw materials is vital to creating a prototypical layout.

Paper making isn’t as straightforward as first impressions. You need wood which can be as logs or pulp (made from waste wood fibres) and Esparto Grass. Chemicals are needed for the processing including bulk deliveries of Caustic Soda. Finally, China Clay is needed to be mixed with the wood fibres. Let’s not forget that basic commodity, coal, required to power the whole mill.

All of these generate rail traffic so we have been searching for relevant information. Luckily in the Internet age, there is plenty to be found.

Hi

This is brilliant good to see another layout inspired by the Auchmuty branch i have built a small N Gauge layout based on a Scottish papermill here is a picture of the real famous low bridge and my recreation of it i made it larger because i wanted to run bigger locos on my layout

Looks good, Inchyra will take the same approach with the low bridge as running Mainline locos has more appeal than an 06 or 08

Work has moved into one of the centrepiece buildings for Inchyra Mill, the processing / warehousing plant.

Again, @Upthedale has built it up with styrene sheet with embossed styrene overlays using South East Finecast products. As you can see, there is much depth to the building with the recessed arches and raised arched lintels. For variety, this building has a slate roof and north light windows.

painting has again aimed to match the palette of the Glenrothes mill and the outbuildings already completed.

The research for Inchyra Mill has thrown up lots of interesting things. There were various raw materials used which required rail transport and many used open wagons covered by tarpaulins.

Two key commodities are Esparto Grass bundles and Wood Pulp bales. Both were imported and would travel from the Fife & Forth estuary docks such as Methil & Granton. From the images found, many / any open wagons were deployed, from 13T, 5 plank and all steel Highfits to 16T minerals and 3 plank opens.

My initial batch are 13T, 5 plank opens from Bachmann, repainted and weathered. Transfers are Modelmaster. The empty wagons have one of the Anyscale Models painted & detailed resin Tarps added.

The sheeted open is created using a Tunnocks caramel wafer wrapper, a method picked off RMWeb and this is my first attempt. It is wrapped over a solid former and intended to represent bales of imported wood pulp. Ropes are twine from model boat builders.

I have been enhancing a Corgi 6t Coles crane to service Inchyra Mill. I have always enjoyed working in and around cranes (and other big construction plant) so relish the opportunity to model them.

The enhancements are simple. A Bigger area of chevrons on the chassis, chevrons added to the tail of the body and red wheel hubs & crane jib tip. New SWL / Radius indicator and new rope.  The chevrons are from Railtec Transfers. I need to sort out the rope & hook which is distorted but can probably wait until it’s on the layout.

A slow burn project through summer has been a new industrial loco kit by Planet Industrials. This is multimedia with a 3D printed shell and etched detail overlays and forms a Hibberd Planet 4W DM. Mechanisation is from a 24.5mm Tenshodo bogie.

This will end up in Maroon for Inchyra Mill once restrictions ease in Manchester

Covid bubble has allowed a running session this weekend whilst helping restock with home cooked meals.

We have been trying out buildings & pipe bridges to let us stand back and judge angles, sizes etc.

test running is faulting the track which is generally good and just a few adjustments needed to be fault free.
