More TEA vicar?

Having a covid-clearout of my cupboards and stock boxes the other day I came across this little unfinshed project:

Sometime around 2014 I had been discussing how to produce TEA bogie tank wagons in 3mm with the late Bruce Smetham. Bruce had suggested his previous method of mounting two joined Kitmaster/Airfix 00 scale 20t tank barrels on the Tri-ang bogies as fitted to the T592 Continental Pacific loco tender as these are a longer wheelbase than the ones fitted to other Tri-ang bogie freight wagons.

This is not quite as outlandish as you might think, there were apparently a considerable number of surplus Continental Pacific tenders left over when Tri-ang ceased TT production and for a while they could be found quite cheaply. I decided to give it a go and produce a rake of 5 wagons. The old Kitmaster tank wagons are now produced by Dapol and so are easy to get hold of;

but the tender bogies proved a little more difficult to find enough of them and with the 3mm Society whitemetal Gloucester freight bogies being more appropriate, I decided to use those instead. By early 2016 I had got as far as producing a rolling prototype, but 2016 was a bad year for me and for one reason and another I stopped modelling altogether so all the bits were packed into a box and put aside.

Maybe now, 4 years later, it is time to resurrect them?

Hi

Good to see!   I had the same chat with Bruce equally many years ago and have 3 bodies like yours and a farish TEA spine chassis to copy, like yours barrels part built bogies in bags - also likey to go under freightliner flats and waiting perspiration ! I will watch with interest . Have to say like the 58!  much more ahead than mine - with failed motor bogies at this time but at least that is with me in Brum!

Happy modellng

Robert.

Ah yes, so it would appear; introduced in 1960 and would have cost you a princely 2/- (Dapol are charging a bit more than 10p for them now!)

Working from the ground up I thought I'd start by checking exactly what bogie bits are in the box:

I've got 2 pairs of Gloucester bogies made and 2 pairs unmade, so the 5th tanker will have a pair of T592 tender bogies in tribute to Bruce's original design. Wheelsets are 9mm Romfords in the Gloucester and 9mm Kean Maygib in the tender bogies.

The first job tonight was drilling out the sideframes to take unflanged pinpoint bearings.

Robert, thanks, although the lack of cab window glazing does very much let it down. What motor bogies are you using?

Pete.

Good to see bogies started.  Whilst depleted I have Evergeen plastic still for the chassis, but was wondering If I could get something 3D printed. - whether to have cast in whitemetal  or dense resin to add a bit of mass low down is in my grey matter/ vaccumm    depending on who you talk to.

The 158 has a pair of Shilibo units, I had glued motors on and one became detached so need to look at a better finish. I had followed prototype by making cabs as seperate modules and had them screwed to the central bonnet and this fixed to the chassis . I will have to revisit once some dmus are off the bench - a 3D print Tadpole currently.

Have fun and I can enjoy the build from my PC.

I drill the holes on one side right through, and then I use the holes as a jig to drill the other side. Apart from improving alignment, having the through hole means I can adjust the amount of sideplay the axle has. The bearing can be set using epoxy which also fills the hole up and can be sanded smooth for painting.
