Portmahomack summer 1978

Recommended Posts

It's August 1978 and Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty is topping the charts. 600 miles north of Baker Street, the first train of the day has arrived at Portmahomack from Tain having deposited a couple of passengers. After years of threats of closure the line looks secure and has recently been spruced up with some new signage. One of the old blue signs has been dumped in an open wagon in the yard. What were they thinking!

What method and paints did you use for weathering the track?

Many thanks

Mark

Hi Mark

I painted the rails Tamiya NATO brown and the sleepers were picked out in various greys and beiges especially in the sidings where I wanted a weather-beaten effect. Then I applied a few washes of dark earth and finally a stone dry brushed on to pick out the sleeper details. Quite a bit of work but then there isn’t much track so definitely worthwhile.

All the best

Max

great stuff Max!  More images please. Cant go wrong with a class 26 and an Inglenook; how big is the whole layout , fiddle included?

Scenic section is 90 x 23 cm and the fiddle board is a piece of 60cm pine shelving.

Hi Max,

What a truly stunning little layout. Less is more, something I'm a big fan of, and you've certainly achieved that here.

Excellent, looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Some engineering work was taking place on a Sunday. Here the Wickham trolley has just been turned by its crew and waits to return to Tain. The skip and open wagon were part of the recent station refurbishment. You can see where the line used to run into the goods shed which was situated behind the corrugated iron fence.

Here a class 26 runs around its train of ballast hoppers and a shark.

We must return tomorrow to watch the thrice-weekly freight.

It's now Monday and the freight has arrived from Tain hauled by Haymarket's 25087 which makes a change from the usual class 26. The train consists of a loaded MCO, an empty VWV and a brakevan.

We picked a good day to visit as 26028 and a BSO are substituting for the usual class 122.

The freights departs for Tain with an empty MCO, ZDV and VWV plus brake van leaving the 26 to run round and wait to return to Tain.

This little reprobate has managed to find it's way to the Port. Originally purchased for a future urban layout, it runs fine on DC but was hopeless on DCC hence it makes the odd appearance alongside a strange variety of out-of-place diesel shunters!

Hi Max,

Hope you don't mind another question, but please could you describe your method of painting the stone walls on your station building.

Many thanks

Mark

Hi Mark

I painted the walls all over in grey and then picked out random blocks in other shades of grey, followed by an earth wash. Finally a bit of stone colour was dry brushed on. Definitely worth experimenting to see what works for you as you can always paint over anything you don’t like.

Best wishes

Max

As others have also said, a great little layout and full of inspiration.

What materials and method of construction did you use for the platform edging and surface?

Many thanks

Mark

Hi Mark

The platform is made from 2mm plastic sheet and is basically a box structure with Slaters stone stuck to the edge. The surface is just grey paint and could have benefited from a bit more texture but I was limited to what I had to hand at the time.

Best wishes

Max
