RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 17, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 17, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon, time for a few more pictures before going to do battle with a 4F valve gear. First of all, thanks to @Roman for the info about Birkenhead and the RFA, that dates the slide to 3rd March when we did a trip to Chester, Wrexham, Bidston and then Hooton and Ellesmere port to cross off pages, 57, 58 and 59 of Bakers Railway Atlas 10th edition. That dates the Royal train pictures to sometime in March/April 2005. Here we are still at Westgate with a Cross Country Voyager heading towards Leeds as the Royal working gets ready to head south ECS. It is seen leaving here. .Then April and Llandudno Where 153303 is ready to take us up the valley towards Blaneau. Where we arrived with a Fairlie waiting on the narrow gauge platforms. Then on to Holyhead. My main memory of the trip is the very good Guard who coped with lots of schoolkids from Bangor, many of whom tried, without success to avoid paying for their trip home. After Conway we complemented him on his efforts. All in all a very good day out. Jamie Edited August 7, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 18, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 18, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon from a rather sunny part of the Charente. After the trip to North Wales there was a slight break in proceedings whilst I headed across the pond to do a daft male menopause thing of cycling in the Rockies. As I was heading for quite high altitudes I had a few days footling around between 5000 and 8000 feet before heading for the high passes. By some strange coincidence many of these journeys were near railway lines so just as a teaser here's one at the base of Sherman Hill as the UP main line heads west out of Cheyenne Wyoming. Here a westbound double stack with approx 13,500 hp on the point heads west under the watchful eye of the conductor of an eastbound that has just come over Sherman Hill and was waiting to get into Cheyenne for a crew change. By chance he knew the, now retired, fireman of the Amtrak train that I had ridden over Sherman in 1978. The guy called Maxfield was one of the last surviving Big Boy firemen. Anyway I did get the rest of my ride done and my avatar was taken at the summit of Boreas pass on the ex Denver South Park and Pacific at 11,500'. I did get back safely and on 10th October Keith and I set off around the West Midlands. Here is a 153 at Stourbridge Town before the 139's took over. The next few were taken, I think round about New Year when the 185's were just coming into service so I headed down to a rather snowy Morley Station and saw a 185 coming out of the tunnel. It turned out to be unit 103, complete with the protective bag over the coupler. A the 185 went past a 158 was heading west. Then on 19th January Keith and I had a day in London doing branches in the east but did go to Paddington. More tomorrow I hope. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 18, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 18, 2020 I've just realised thst the westbound double stack train is on track 2 which takes it over the 1900's line over Sherman summit rather than the 1950's built No 3 track which has a 55 mph limit rather than 79. This doesn't happen often as most westbounds get sent along the gentler grades of No 3 track. The stack train must be what us known as a 'god' train with the highest priority. Normally you only see Eastbounds coming over the hill. Jamie
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 19, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 19, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon. A quick update before I head out to give the grass a final cut for the year. It's going to start raining tomorrow. We are at Colton Junction in early 2006 probably February. It turned out to be a busy afternoon. Firstly a Freightliner 66 went south towards Church Fenton, Light Engine. Probably heading to Midland Road depot in Leeds. Shortly after two trains arrived together. A EWS coal train with York built hoppers and a 158 heading south for Leeds and beyond. Then a Freightliner set of coal hoppers. And a lonely light engine heading north up the Selby diversion. Then another 158 heading south. And finally a 325 heading north. Quite a variety in a short space of time. I doubt that I would see so many coal trains now. Jamie Edited August 7, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 20, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 20, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon from a rather grey, damp and cool Charente. To start with we are in Leeds and as I was going into town one day I noticed that the demolition of Doncaster's Monk Bridge works had opened up a new view of the remains of the approach viaduct to what was Leeds Central Station. Some of the view has been obscured by new build now. As far as I know it is used as a car park by Leeds Commercials who operate out of the old NER roundhouse on Wellington Street. Next we are at Paddington with a view that has also changed. No HST's now and I think that the Heathrow Express units are on their way out. The 360's were working the Heathrow Connect services though. Then we boarded our HST for a trip to Taunton to knock off the Berks and Hants route. This 59/1 was in the station at Westbury. Together with one of my old friends 59204. The above photos were taken on 23rd March 2006. Now we move forward into April and a 158 heading into Leeds as it exits Marsh Lane Tunnel. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 22, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 22, 2020 (edited) Good morning all. Some more picture for you. First of all another couple taken near Marsh Lane cutting where a footbridge crosses the line near the stone terminal. Here a 185 heads eastwards. It's one of those locations that wold make a good model. Viaduct then embankment leading into a large tunnel moth with a goods yard behind. There used to be a station roughly where the rear of the train is. The road on the south side of the viaduct is appropriately called Railway Street; And a 158 heading for Leeds whilst a 144 waits on the loop line for a path. I believe this area was the original terminus for the Leeds and Selby Railway that George Hudson bought and closed for a while so that all the traffic went on his lines via Normanton to Leeds. We then head south to Clapham Junction. Here a 450. Then a 66 heads west with an engineering train. One of the 458's when they were the unloved. And a 455/X unit with the ex 4Pep coach heading in. Off the top of my head I can't remember which sub class got the ex 4 PEP coaches. More tomorrow I hope. caradoc
The 455/7 sub-class (5701-5750) have the ex-Class 508 TSO. Great pics again, thanks Jamie !
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 23, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 23, 2020 (edited) Good morning, it's a bit damp here but there are some more pictures. The Clapham Junction pictures were taken 18th May. Keith and I were on a Southern day rover which I think cost us £10 each. Our first destination was Portsmouth Harbour where HMS Warrior was looking rather nice. Then came Littlehampton Followed by Bognor Regis, but no visit to Squires. Then a bit of time at Barnham with it's lovely box. And both Sothern and South Western trains. Lot of lines on page 11 were crossed off but we didn't finish that page till 2009. 27 completed so far. What a way to spend retirement. Jamie Edited August 7, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 24, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 24, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon. It's still 2006 and we start with another trip south. We went down to near Windsor to visit our son who was stationed there. I think this is Windsor and Eton Riverside. Then three where I'm not sure of the location but think it could be Swindon where a 60 heads through with steel empties. The a 59 appeared with a stone train. Followed by an HST accelerating away. Next we are definitely in East Anglia and a 170 and 156 at Norwich. it's 6th July. Then out to what I think is Felixstowe from Ipswich. That day ticked off two more pages. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 24, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 24, 2020 Thanks for those two corrections,. Thst means that Swindon was on 15th November when I did Standish Junction to Swindon. And thecEastcAnglia ones were on 21st November when I completed page 46. Thanks. caradoc
I think the 60 on steel empties is at Gloucester, with its long platform; Hence the sign for Platform 1 ! 3

RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 24, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 24, 2020 Thanks for those corrections. Now that Gloucester has been mentioned I recognise it. I will amend my records. I must have been changi g therd to catch a train to Swindon. Jamie
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 25, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 25, 2020 (edited) Good evening, it's got dark early. I wonder why. We are still in East Anglia and as the previous photo was identified as Great Yarmouth, I suspect that this is also at Yarmouth but looking west. Later the same day a trio of 20's off RHTT duties at I think Stowmarket. Then a 57 at what could be Ely according to the rail atlas. Then we move forward to 20th January 2007 and 45407 only 2 miles from home climbing past Cottingley towards Morley having just crossed Elland Road. This is the Leeds Bradford residential which ran from Milton Keynes to Manchester Bradford and Leeds then back to Manchester and MK according to 6 Bells Junction. Then a day at Donny with a 66 heading south across the crossovers. And then the Test Train coming in from the north. Hopefully some more tomorrow. RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 26, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 26, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon. After Doncaster I must have had a run up to York and here is the Network test train following us into the station. And parked in the bay were the two test/icebreaker locos, I can't remember what class they were converted from. However they were parked there ready for ice breaker duties. I seem to remember that they only had one bogie powered on each loco. Then a trip near home to Batley and here is a 158 heading for Leeds with Hanging Heaton on the background. And coming the other way a 144. The ex GN lines used to be on the right with lines to Woodkirk and Drighlington. To the left the Birstall branch used to turn off to the left. Running just below my in laws house. Then a trip to Didcot probably in February. A 67 with what looks like a railtour. 1And quite a collection of 66's stabled. Moe tomorrow if I get chance. RMweb Premium keefer Posted October 26, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted October 26, 2020 The Network Test locos were cl.86s, given numbers 86901 & 902 (ex. 86253 & 210). They had one powered bogie and could self-propel up to 40 mph http://www.traintesting.com/Loadbank.htm

This meant of course it had to be hauled by a diesel. In the case of the OHL/Immunisation testing north of Ipswich that I was involved with, the loadbank was hauled by a 47, regrettably the details of which 47 have been lost. 1
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 28, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon some more pictures. Still in Spring 2007. It's 16th April and we set off on a trip to do some lines in the Chester area. We start at Warrington Bank Quay with a 92 hauling empty flats south. Then a DRS 66 heading south. We then went via Shrewsbury to Wexham General and back to Chester then via MerseyRail to Ellesmere Port and caught the infrequent DMU to Helsby and Warrington. That finished off pages 40 and 51. We next move on to a day out at Colton Junction with a GNER liveried HST heading south on the diversion. Then a 66 on empty flats headed north. And a Cross Country Voyager followed the HST south. That's it for today. Jamie Edited August 7, 2022 by jamie92208
RMweb Premium jamie92208 Posted October 29, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted October 29, 2020 (edited) Good afternoon. More pictures on a sunny but cool afternoon. First the real reason that I went to Colton Junction that day. Rood Ashton Hall heading south to Birmingham on a railtour that had been to York. This must have been taken about 4.15pm. Thanks to Six Bells Junction I've been able to date the photo to the afternoon of 28th April 2007. Then we head south. My wife and I went to a a church conference at Brighton the next week and one afternoon I escaped and rode Volk's electric railway. As far as I know the oldest electric railway n the UK. Here my transport is waiting to depart from the pier terminus. Off we set and I was fascinated that we actually ran through the carriage shed. Presumably this is a 3rd class conveyance. Then the next two at the Marina terminus. And another view of the terminus. A unique line. I believe that Ben Ando is a supporter.
