I vaguely  remember that there was some way of transferring units between the two systems. As far as I know the city centre loop hadn't been built at this time though I'm not sure.  I do remember going to Exchange but not to any of the works or sheds on the Southport lines. I think that Birkenhead North was the main on system repair shop.

The loop didn't open until 1977, I think prior to that the units had to be dragged the long way around via Edge Hill, Warrington etc., Southport units were not common at North, probably because of the drag requirement. Hall Road was the maintenance depot for the Southport line stock iirc.

Also recognisable for the large roof-mounted air intakes for the traction motors

Good evening from a snow free but rather cool Charente.   The UK tardis is still on murkyside in 1971. I was still tramping round Birkenhead North depot. A service train came past heading towards Liverpool.

1152461690_Slides1971-B029.jpg.091b9b004df823a71b75d53d72e9b4ec.jpg

Inside the sehd a unit looked as if it had just been repainted.

1933762090_Slides1971-B030.jpg.f477879c814c74d334a6ed8780471c11.jpg

And another looked distinctly poorly.

11165310960_Slides1971-B031.jpg.62729681c200fd58ef9fb781c3d4ddd0.jpg

We now leap forward to 1977 and IIRC the first Woodlesford Railfans excursion which went hunting 56's.  The railfans were young lads from the village who had seen my models in the window and also delivered railway magazines for the newsagents.  Some were in the scout troop that I helped to run and they asked me if I would apply for a shed permit on their behalf.  The first trip out was by minibus .   This was what I looked like in those days. Much shorter hair than in 1971 and it was still dark.

1650765994_Slides1977-B023.jpg.371a8602548dadcd5823d183afc9cc91.jpg

We set off down the M1 and the first port of call was Tinsley where a 56 and testcoach were parked outside.1559925368_Slides1977-B024.jpg.593a775cee971307cea2621e38b79a06.jpg

Then into the shed.   The word Romania was verbotten as the staff were still struggling to get the first 30 ito service.  Quality control was apparently unheard of.

Good evening from the Charente. We are still in 1977, probably June.  From Tinsley we went to Shirebrook where there was quite an array of motive power including 56's, 47's an 08 and a 37.

784471752_Slides1977-B026.jpg.73b3faf8b426766794de1ca2a973db15.jpg

More 08's and close ups of the 47 and 56.  More 56's were on the roads at the rear of the shed going round the corner.

538278575_Slides1977-B027.jpg.e9be0ae61b3c00b1c4201a74e7b934a7.jpg

And in that collection of very new 56's was this one. Someone would have had some explaining to do.

Then we move on to early January 1978.  I was heading to Newbury to visit my brother and his family. It was a tad cool and 46 039 was waiting to take me down towards Reading.

1428537377_Slides1978-1001.jpg.9e1d5498fc61045e44325b066ae0a612.jpg

It ws sunny but still cool at Reading but there was plenty to see.  Here an HST is waiting to depart for London.281944752_Slides1978-1002.jpg.355bc0ce1ea2c6de57a892cf5c62227c.jpg

And as it set off a 50 is heading west.

I think the damaged Class 56 was 56022.

A Class 46 on a cross-country service to Reading would have been very rare. They normally worked NE-SW services, not those to Reading and the SR. Indeed the photo looks to be the west end, so did the 46 arrive from Derby and beyond and there was a different loco the other end that took you forward?

As far as I remember it was our haulage south. I may well have changed at Brum. It looks to have sun on it so in the morning it would have been facing west, however I'm open to suggestions.

I'm certain that the Class 46 photo is taken whilst at Leeds City station, which is suggested in jamie's comment of it "waiting to take me to Reading." Great photos from a great era, thanks for posting.

Thanks. It was indeed taken on a snowy Leeds City. I'd travelled in from Woodleford on the usual Mk 1 DMU and was changing onto a southbound NE-SW service. There are still a few more days worth to go from the same box.

And a tadpole came in from, I think Basingstoke

Almost definitely from Basingstoke. However, not a tadpole, but a 3-H (cl.205) unit . The Tadpoles worked Reading-Tonbridge, other end of Reading station, and they had two thin Hastings gauge coaches plus one fat driving trailer.

Looks like a cl.119 or 120. (Not sure which of these worked into London).

By about 1982, the 119s had taken over the Reading-Redhill-Tonbridge duties previously covered by the SR DEMUs, giving SR crews their first taste of mechanical diesel units. Although the DEMUs were diesel, they had more in common with the SR EMUs e.g. the same EE traction motors, so the mechanical units were probably a bit of a shock to the system!

The class 119s usually ran to Redhill/Gatwick, but not from that bay, which was normally the all stations Padd and the preserve of the class 117s.

Good evening, a few more from 1978. It's the 18th March and I'm at Llandudno Junction waiting for a train to Betws Y Coed.  A class 40 came in from the Crewe direction heading west.

144929443_Slides1978-1025.jpg.ac44d19e0651cd112eb842aacb4bf2fd.jpg

And then headed across the Conwy river.

574989208_Slides1978-1026.jpg.1e145d9e8cb749e78670492a30dad3cc.jpg

The following Thursday we were out on our assessment hike and camped in a valley above Tan Y Grisau. The slate mines were served via an incline from the station that we walked up after nipping down for a pint or two.

132069668_Slides1978-2018.jpg.b5559d3932ea7e08dcaa8ad5643969d6.jpg

1These were the main mines on the upper level.  I believe that they were also served by an incredibly steep incline on the other side of the hill that connected into the Croesor tramway.  Sorry of my welsh spellings are wrong.

1118788718_Slides1978-2022.jpg.a093964a571aca42b5087fbc924998cf.jpg

A few weeks later, probably early May it's a bit warmer and I'm north of York as a Deltic speeds south I think.

1795448075_Slides1978-3001.jpg.6ae86c8d837fac87da3e84a1fd2cbf06.jpg

And a 40 plods north with a tanker train.

The first two could be entered into the blue striped Freightliner container thread too.

The Deltic however appears to have been seconded to Sealink, if those arrows of indecision are anything to go by. The image is back to front....

There you go - should still be heading south though!

Really interesting shot for the Mk2d coach - don't know if it's an FK or BFK but really shows the corridor-window handrails and the Flame Red vestibule panels.

Good evening again from a rather damp place.   The pictures are still in the York area in the first half of 1978. First another southbound 40 on the fast lines with what looks like some kind of freightliner working.

612574204_Slides1978-3003.jpg.80d4427858c8fc8efbf574c52d0d24cb.jpg

As it came past us.  Some memory in my grey matter brings Beningborough to mind as a location but Raskelf also features in the forgettery.

1314686291_Slides1978-3004.jpg.e5c6e20c1fe19eabbd3aadf8a14b0e3b.jpg

A northbound.   Lots of freight.

1344195401_Slides1978-3005.jpg.f06bd63d8d2282604080943fcfff0878.jpg

Then off down into York, which was the main point of the expedition.  Here a general view of the station from the car park.

2118888559_Slides1978-3006.jpg.50c7935d3d783408374c7cc401ba4767.jpg

And a Deltic hauled train, I think it was northbound.  I've just had to flip this one as well.

1741641752_Slides1978-3007.jpg.3deafd9eea59d7041d1711483f9e3b53.jpg

Then a general shot of the interior.  This was my first attempt at night shots with exposures guessed.  A mate from work had taken me over for the evening and provided advice.
