BR Class 206 “Tadpole”

Recommended Posts

I spotted this collection of parts on eBay looking somewhat distressed (or panic stricken) and thought they could form the gestation off a Tadpole unit.

The parts I got.

The parts I’m going to use/modify.

Me again.

If you go ahead with this, I can help with photos of the roofs.

Dave.

Dave,

That would be brilliant - much appreciated.  There are a few photos on Google images but not much on the roofs.

Cheers

I won't one....... It looks worse than my 3D. Do you only have the DMBS or is the rest hidden away.

Keith

Hi Keith,

I have an even more panic stricken MTK Hastings unit to donate the centre coach and will figure something out for the DMBS.

Currently contemplating how to strip the paint from the coach body/roof.  The white metal ends are soaking in t-cut overnight.

Cheers

Don't use ModelStrip or similar caustic soda based paint strippers on the aluminium bodies. It will corrode the surface of the metal. I found that the hard way on a Phoenix coach and had to spend ages with filler primer putting it right.

Am leaning towards a light sanding with fine sandpaper followed by a coat of etching primer once the white metal ends are re-attached.

Cheers

The centre coach is from a 6L really you need one from a 6S.

Hi Keith,

Hmmm.  The Class 201 (6S) coaches are 58’ long, which should be 232mm long in 4mm.  The Class 202 (6L) coaches are 63’-5” long, which should be 254mm in 4mm.  The MTK coaches are 230mm long (driving) and 232mm long (centre), which to my mind makes them more 6S than 6L.  Then again they are MTK so they could still be wrong on so many levels.

Cheers

I saw this on Ebay and thought it looked a step too far.

You have made a great job of proving me wrong!

John.

Thanks John.  I thought they deserved a second chance...

Darius.

Hope these help.

I have messed about with the exposure to bring out the details for you.

Not wishing to teach you to suck eggs, but some miss the diffing spacing on the roof vents between the Epb and the narrow Hastings stock.

Note also the selection of vents on the Hastings coaches.

The other side of the Motor underframe is the same as any other short Hastings.

Best of luck.

They are Short Hastings. Note that one saloon end of the centre car and the Motor only has 3 large passenger windows. Long units had 4 each end and in the Motor.

Just checked photos on t'internet and, as I thought, a 6L would have 8 windows/seating bays. So MTK have got that reasonably right as a 6S.

My apologies Joseph.

I've only just noticed you post re the number of windows.

Dave.

Dave,

Thanks very much for uploading that superb set of photos.  They will be a great help - especially for the roof and all that conduit/pipework.

As for the 6L vs 6S issue I have learned a lot about the differences between the two.

Cheers

Today I hope to add handrails, door hinges and, thanks to Dave for the photos, the roof details.

Cheers
