Has anybody used the ANYCUBIC Mega S 3D printer ?

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of purchasing the ANYCUBIC Mega S 3D printer. I live in Cairns, Australia. I have already downloaded the necessary software : Ultimaker Cura 4.6. Has anybody bought and used this printer/software combination ?

Note : I work in OO gauge.

What are you wanting to print? FDM printers like the Mega give pretty coarse results. More typical for modelling use is the Photon or other resin printer, which are messier, and have smaller build volumes but yield far superior detail.

I’m not sure I’d use the Mega for stock, for example, whilst scenic items would probably be ok.

Look at the Anycubic Photon.

The Elegoo Mars would be my choice if going for a resin printer.

I've got both and I'd second the Mars.

It's not all that helpful to just say that  you should get either though - like I say, what you want to print is pretty critical. You won't be able to print much in the way of OO rolling stock on a Photon/Mars in one piece, the build volume is only about 125x65x160 (off the top of my head).

I was hoping to build wagons but in ''kit'' form ie. build them in parts to be assembled.

So this would do the job much better ?

The Elegoo Mars does not seem to be available in Australia at the moment.

Resin would appear to be very toxic. Is it worse than acetone (used for smoothing ABS) ?

If you are prepared to wait for 2 - 3 months Elegoo are bringing out a Saturn printer. This has a much bigger footprint than the Mars or Photon.

Resin toxicity is what is putting me off at the moment.

printing ‘kits’ seems to defeat the purpose of the object - building complete bodies/items.

The Saturn does have a much bigger volume, price is unknown as yet though. There are other resin printers with larger volumes, but they are much more expensive.

As for toxicity it’s definitely not particularly nice. But if you exercise some basic caution it’s not a problem IMO. Wear gloves, don’t get any on skin, if you do wash very thoroughly (UV exposure will cause burns). I’ve had zero issues after 9 months printing stuff regularly.

Mrs njee20 dislikes the smell, it doesn’t bother me, but don’t expect to print in the house. FDM printers have no smell, however. the Mars smells less than the Photon, grey resin smells less than green.

I have an Anycubic mega S and it is a very nice machine. Sturdy and very good quality print for a filament printer. I use it for utility prints - servo brackets and such like and quick prints of things I am developing for final resin printing, for which I have an Elegoo Mars.

You see filament printing is quick and clean. Resign printing is good quality printing but it's messy, slower and with added fumes (although the Mars pro has a carbon filter).

Horses for courses.

Not sure what happenned to the Mars,  I bought one from Elegoo via amazon.com.au a couple of months back  when Mars were selling them off at a cut price everywhere. Now I can't find them on Amazon or any other  Australian stockists.....

Did notice this one at the place I get resin from, haven't done much research into it but it does look a lot like a Mars. The vitals like LCD screen, dimensions etc are pretty standard across this whole range of these small SLA printers no matter the brand, main differences would be in general design, software/firmware  and robustness of the Z axis.

As for resin, it is a little messy but I wouldn't get too hung up on the toxicity -  many schools are using these printers so with a little care there is no danger of having major issues.

The standard resin is a little brittle. I've been playing around adding Monucure flex at different ratios with some success. I've been able to turn it into a slightly more robust output, similar to plastic kits. Adding more flex gives a more nylon like result, think of those old 1/76th scale AirfiX figures.  100% flex prints out rubber.

Also, I got a couple of bottles of resin marketed as "ABS like" from the site I linked above. Not exactly sure how that prints yet, I'm yet to try it out.

Finally, if you are on Facebook there is a group for those using 3D printers to model NSWGR.  Everything 3D modellingwise   is posted (mainly ho scale) , track infrastructure, buildings, stock and general bits and pieces, so might give you an insight on which printers are used for what.

Main issue I'm having right now is the shortage of IPA. Up until March I was getting 5 litres for $29.95. With this virus it first doubled in price before disappearing from every where. Now its over $50 to $100 per litre if you can get it.  As a result I've bought some Monocure resinaway. Up til now this seemed dear, but at $66 for 2 litres its now much cheaper than IPA. Its also meant to go a lot further than IPA as well, though again I'm yet to try it.

Thanks for the info, I'd been pondering the Epax X10

- price seemed quite reasonable but I think I'll hold out to see what the Saturn comes in at.

I don't know it I must say, but I'm certainly not an expert. The Phrozen Shuffle XL gets mediocre results, and there's the Peopoly Phenom which is huge, but expensive. I'm sorely tempted by a Saturn, price dependent. There's also the question of whether you want to print bigger things, or more things. If you want to print more, then having two Marses is more versatile.

It would seem that Anycubic do not make smaller extruder nozzles. They only make the 0.4mm but I want to buy 0.3mm and 0.2mm nozzles. Has anybody tried to fit generic nozzles to the Anycubic printers ?

This French company can supply a set of nozzles :

This layout:

has buildings printed with a Photon according to the OP.  I was very impressed, blown away really, and almost tempted to get a printer myself.  The footprint is not big enough for me I think.

I agree ; this is great work. It makes me think twice about resin printing as I can really see how good it is. I do not think you can get that quality of brickwork with filament printing...or can you ?
