Hornby R4791 Autocoach

When I saw the following item at a well known store my initial reaction was that a previous owner had swapped out an early model item into a new packaging.  I have seen this done on a few online auction site listings where cheaper models are masqueraded as being recent models.  However, a quick search shows that the item is correctly packaged with its plastic wheels and large tension lock couplers.  The manufacturer MSRP is GBP35.99 and the store's normal discounted price for a new item is GBP28.00.  In this day and age a "model" with plastic wheels and oversized couplers selling for a retail price of GBP36.00 is absurd.  For a few pound more one can find a far superior Bachmann model.  For about the same price one is able to purchase a new highly detailed Pullman coach with table lighting.

But can you find a superior GWR Autotrailer for those prices? Or any price?

Besides they have normal Hornby blackened metal wheels not plastic and NEM pockets. Or don't you look at photographs before moaning?

To use your language and tone, what an absurd post.....

I just clicked your link and its down as £20 wit hthe new version £28 - 7 in stock. So the 2nd hand is £8 cheaper, not sure where you got £36 from

When one quotes a manufacturer's MSRP then it is quite likely that one got the amount from the manufacturer's website.

Since when did Hornby release blackened metal wheelsets on their stock?  I have purchased more than enough Hornby replacement metal wheels to tell the difference and have never seen a Hornby passenger or goods rolling stock metal wheel that is plated or chemically blackened.  Before posting I magnified the store image plus the manufacturer's image from the Hornby website and can see no trace of a metal wheelset being fitted.

Compare to the plastic wheels on the 68 ft restaurant car on the Hornby website.  We know that the wheels on this car are definitely plastic.  Do you see any difference to the wheels on the Collett Autocoach (trailer)?  Both cars look to have plastic wheels fitted.

While I do not have the very latest model number examples of both cars but numerous earlier and not so recent releases,  I am almost completely certain that neither car has NEM coupler fittings.  The coupler would be the heritage ex-Airfix small or large tension lock coupler.  As far as I can see Hornby has not upgraded either car and both are sold basically as Airfix (autotrailer),  then Dapol (autotrailer and dining car) sold them a generation ago.  At least Dapol offered an additional full sill length underframe as an alternative fitment as well as the current underframe with the sill cutouts.

Just further on this,  Rails has the coach for GBP28.50 and its own site image shows plastic wheels and non-NEM couplers fitted.

For comparison,  refer the following link showing an earlier release in GWR livery where metal wheels and non-NEM couplers are definitely fitted from new.

Compare the plastic  wheels on this Hornby Railroad Mk1 coach (MSRP GBP22.99).

As regards a RTR Autotrailer, of course there isn't another because the Bachmann one is a BR one to a new diagram (& length), although generally in the GWR style.

Sorry, but I think you are wrong re-couplings and wheels

Those are still bogie mounted Airfix pockets and plastic wheels.

There are possibly 3 or 4 Airfix style pocket couplings types available ranging from their original teeny one up to Hornby's own large plastic tension lock with Airfix compatible tail.

I've had all types at various times.
