I'm currently (paused at the moment) building an L class, and am part way through designing some etches for an old i-class. Love a good Manning Wardle! Thanks, your MW L class looks brilliant by the way It amazes me how small they are. To fit the terrier chassis I’ve had to increase the length by about 10-20% over a K class and accept the wheels are simply too large (I know I could swap them but that’s for another day) Even then I’m having to hack bits off the chassis to make it fit and the terrier isn’t exactly a giant of a locomotive to begin with. still it will be nice to have another small Victorian loco to go with Bellerophon when it’s done Edited June 6, 2020 by Adam FW
jdb82
I bought a copy of The Chronicles of Boulton's Sidings a few months ago. Spoilt for choice for victorian locos in there!

I’ve started designing a neilson 0-6-0 box tank based on miner and spitfire but I don’t know if it will ever go anywhere. RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 8, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 8, 2020 My latest print failed sadly. Though it was entirely my fault, I was using up the last of my yellow resin and didn’t have enough if anyone other than corbs (he already knows) can identify what this was supposed to be I’ll be impressed. To make it easier the print has a cab, saddle tank and smoke box and a running board on it. All for the same loco.

RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2020 Since the yellow ran out I’ve been experimenting with clear resin sadly it doesn’t stay crystal clear, more Like frosted glass when cured. its also much runnier than my translucent yellow here’s a test print of the same model as the half finished yellow print. See if anyone can identify the prototype now that all the big pieces are there but it’s still on the support material. You may also spot the minor failure on the buffer beam where the support wasn’t sufficient
RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 9, 2020 Some images of my manning wardle print loosely held together after its first coat of primer. There’s still a bit of sanding to do but I’ve got most of The support material marks off though there’s a defect on the smoke box door which is tricky to clean up I’m very pleased with the boiler backplate and safety valve detail, hopefully my painting will do them justice

willsheldrake
Considering @Corbs knows what it is and the earlier reference it it being Avonside it is obviously Portbury. The Avonside 0-6-0ST locomotive based at the Bristol Harbour Railway.

It's easiest to see in the fourth image that this loco has a square/flat sided saddletank not rounded like Portbury's and the buffer beam is different though that's very hard to see with the clear resin.
RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 10, 2020 (edited) To make it a little easier as the clear resin is like glass before it's cured here's the model of the mystery avonside in the slicing software. The final hint is that this loco is preserved Edited June 10, 2020 by Adam FW
RMweb Premium Moxy Posted June 10, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 10, 2020 I'll guess at 'St Dunstan' https://preservedbritishsteamlocomotives.com/avonside-engine-co-works-no-2004-st-dunstan-0-6-0st/

Charlie
Quick question, do you add the supports or does the program do it for you?

I use the chitubox slicer software. Like most slicers it has an automatic support option that does the supports itself within some parameters but it’s not flawless so you still have to check all the supports and add some manually where needed and remove excess supports as well
RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 14, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 14, 2020 Bit of an update on the manning wardle it’s been painted in navy blue and black with an Indian red running board side along with some copper and brass detailing. Annoyingly the blue has taken far longer to dry than I’d hoped for as I had wanted to get the lining done by now and start glueing it together I was toying with red lining but I’m going to go with gold instead as I’ve got another blue and red industrial loco and blue and gold always looks smart on traction engines so I presume it’ll work on a loco just as well I’m not sure what to do about the splashers. I don’t want to draw attention to them as the wheels are oversized so I may leave them black or just add gold lining to the black though blue would be more typical to match the other bodywork
RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 14, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 14, 2020 I bit the bullet and cut the terrier chassis down to fit under the manning wardle body. Its not my finest work but it’s all hidden and the running board fits snugly on top The saddle tank meanwhile fit a little too snugly so I had to trim the motor mount down a bit and sand the inside of the saddle tank to get a bit more clearance I'm really happy with the seam between the terrier boiler and the manning wardle, there’s a slight colour mismatch but it’s minor and will be mostly hidden in shadow 9
RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 15, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 15, 2020 I’ve remembered why I don’t enjoy loco lining. This has taken far longer than it should have

RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 17, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 17, 2020 I’m really starting to get somewhere with the manning wardle now. Just the hand rails to go and the saddle tank is done. Then it’s just the footplate and bunker to worry about assembling
RMweb Gold Adam FW Posted June 17, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted June 17, 2020 Handrails and the boiler backplate are done now. I’m very happy with the backplate as I wasn’t sure it would print properly or that I could paint it very well but it’s come out very nicely I’ve also been able to run some bent 0.3mm wire to the safety valve through the spectacle plate for some extra detail, it was very fiddly but it looks nice. There’s some 0.45mm wire under the sight glasses as well which was much easier to do but I don’t thinks it’s any better than painting the 3d print 7
