Airfix B set coach conversions

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Being a novice with great western  I may be asking a stupid question

I have a few spare  airfix b set coaches  that I would like to convert  into some different  coaches  for my BLT  layout  are there any comet sides  that I could use to expand my fleet

Parcels or coaches

Regards darren

The Airfix E140 body is 60' over ends sides (i.e. ignoring the bow ends), so there are a range of Comet sides that could be considered, the most appropriate being the K40 brake.

The Airfix body is rather strange however in that it is very wide, and the whole roof/side/end profile is an almost perfect replica of the fat 1929 Riviera stock. Not exactly typical BLT stuff!

Thanks that's kind of what I want to do

Do you know if the drop lights come  with the sides?

I know I need end details, underframe  bogies and roof vents to finish is there anything else that's needed

Droplights are included with the etched sides, but door hinges are not.

It depends on which one you are modelling, the body of the Airfix b set is good for a E140 (7ft plate) or E145 (9ft steel)

I think the K40 referees to for conversion should have the 7ft bogies

both are available from Comet or 247, with very nice RTR 7ft bogies on the Hornby Bow End coaches (annoyingly not available as spares!)

Thanks

I'm looking  at modeling mid 20s to mid 30a what paint scheme will be  best

As I've seen full brown and cream and brown

Darren,

It will be one of the chocolate & cream liveries as brown was later.

See the excellent gwr.org for full details of the differences - but be aware that a coach could retain an older livery for a few years as they didn't repaint the whole fleet overnight but waited for them to need painting.
