Steam locomotive weathering

Recommended Posts

hello RMweb, regular visitor but infrequent poster here

Basically I'm looking for advice on how to get that "worked but clean" look, I'll post my efforts below, but I was wondering how everyone goes about sealing matte paint/powders etc over a gloss finish with out losing the gloss sheen (if that makes sense)

at the moment my locos just have matte paint on top of the gloss layer and that's it, is there a trick to doing this or would it be a case of just being really careful not to get matte varnish on places I want to look gloss

hopefully that makes sense, here are my current best efforts at trying to achieve this

Try using a paper or card mask. Once your gloss layer has dried hard, cut out a shape that approximates to your required gloss area. Doesn't need to be millimetre accurate. For a sharper edge to your matt area, hold the mask close to the model (not touching it), and for a faded edge, move the mask further way.

Practise the technique on a plain piece of paper and you'll soon see what effects you can create.
