Ruyton Road Revisited. What to do with an old classic

The layout has gone to a good home in Bristol (Not me) and is in the process of being converted to P4.

The above shot shows the P4 track superimposed on a nearly vertical picture of Ruyton Rd. The specification for the plain track was 24ft rail lengths with eight sleepers per panel. Sleepers to be 9ft long.

The Templot templates will be used to produce the new track and the A6 point. 

The two B6 points have already been built using interleaved sleepers.

I'm so glad it's gone to a new home Marc, really sorry I couldn't take it on myself.

 

It's good that it's being converted to P4, I remember when John was planning it, he and Brian had many discussions over whether to do it in EM or go the whole hog to P4.... :)

Photos by current owner showing the progress of track relaying with 18.83mm gauge track.

 

Careful replacement of the cork underlay has taken place ensuring minimal damage to the original structures and scenery.

 

Replacement points have been built. All are based on the A6 configuration but built with interlaced timbers.

More progress on Ruyton Road. The points have been glued in position. Also in the pictures is some pictures of the kit built stock that will be running on this layout when the conversion is completed. Also the brick built hut has been replaced as it would have been out of period.

"So the latest is that the siding has been laid and ballasted but rails and chairs not painted. Start made to main line (yes I know main line is pushing it a bit). Initial template and sleepers laid. Rails are temporarily in place to check clearance.

 

Also a bit of cheque book modelling in the form of a Dapol Rectangular Tank wagon. Well I was in town and just happened to pop into Antics and there it was. Anyway NEM pockets and coupling removed, OO wheels replaced, three links and new coupling hook, bit of additional weight and just a very slight scrape of the brake shoes with a scalpel blade. Job done (well perhaps a bit of further  weathering to the weathered factory finish) and for £17 quid I’m quite happy. You probably weren’t aware that Ruyton just up the line had a small Gas works!"

With exception of the quarry branch turnout track now fixed in place and main line (for want of a better word) and siding ballasted. The hut (altered Severn Models kit) has moved around a bit but like the shown position.

 

Progress has slowed a bit due to a slight diversion in the form of a Great North of Scotland Brake which along with an accompanying 4 wheel GNS carriage currently under construction will form the quarry workers train. Story is both were sold (given away!) just after the reopening of the railway. I’m amazed they made it all the way South in one piece!

Further progress in that wiring has now ben completed and trains have again run on Ruyton Road albeit only the scenic part at the moment.

 

Turnouts are switched by servo’s using Dingo servo mounts with microswitches controlled through a Megapoints controller (the 4 point version). The main track feeds are connected to 7mm pcb sleeper strip.

Pending the building of a proper control panel with levers the actual control set up can only be described as a lash up! The Bachmann controller was obtained cheap from a show a few years again and is used for testing.

With track relaying largely complete and new fiddle yard boards built I have recently moved to consider the fiddle yard itself. With 3 exit tracks, the main line, run round and quarry branch I wanted something that was flexible but would keep stock handling to a minimum. Cassettes then!

Having helped Robin Gay operate his lovely Rolvenden layout I was mightily impressed by his split cassettes and the ease they connected together and came apart. Sort of a cassette shunting system. The original idea came from a Chris Pendlenton article in MRJ 27. Robin was very kind to give up an afternoon recently to give a hands on lesson in how he made the actual connections.

There was also a slight setback with the failure of the Bachmann set controller. Wiring for the fiddle yard will include sockets for handheld controllers but in the meantime the Bachmann controller was lashed up for testing. Not wanting to spend much on something that would only be temporary I came across several resources where people had utilised a pwm unit and transformer. Both were obtained from eBay for less that a tenner and a box secret from The Range for 50p. I was surprised by how well it works.

The cassette entry tracks and connectors are now in place and tested with strategically placed temporary wire and croc clips. Next is back to wiring and the cross baseboard connections and sockets for the handheld.

As a break from working on Ruyton I was distracted into building a couple of 4 wheel Great North of Scotland vehicles. Story is that they were sold by that company to the quarry company to be used for a workers train from the station to the quarry. Both the all third and passenger brake are from Prickly Pear and went to gather really well. They are in the painting queue!

Just caught up with this thread. How wonderful to see this classic layout saved and being given a new lease of life.

 

I'm very interested in the interlaced sleepering on the new points - was that something that the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire did? I presume that it's remaining part of the S&MLR?

Some general shots from different viewpoints. Unfortunately it's a tad difficult at the moment to get behind the layout to take a better picture of the front of the station. At some stage I will turn the layout around to get some different views. The station building itself built by John Spencer was based on the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire station at Llanymynech and was intended I believe for a previous OO layout so I estimate it must be about 40 years old.

There are some photo's that show interlaced points as well as others that indicate otherwise so bit of a mixture!  They are in keeping with the idea of a backwater light railway as Ruyton is very much a S&MR twig off a branch similar to the Criggion line, and will remain so. Although I do have stock that is appropriate for the line some of which still needs to be built I have also taken some liberties! So in my world the GNoSR carriages were sold off by that company to the quarry and used for a quarry workers train. Likewise the Black Hawthorne is used alongside the Sentinal as a quarry engine.

Following a kind invitation from Chris Challis, Ruyton made an appearance at Railwells over the last weekend. Apart from a couple of tiny niggles which were soon sorted (albeit one I will have to revisit) I was really happy with how it operated. Very grateful for the many kind comments that were made and thanks to my friend Ash who kindly provided transport and invaluable operator help.

Ruyton looked splendid. You've done a really good job and an arguably seminal layout has been sympathetically upgraded and preserved for posterity. 

 

Did the chap pop back and enquire about the Sentinel ?

Regarding the chap with questions about the early Sentinel we missed each other on about three/four occasions but eventually did catch up and I was even able answer his questions and point him in the right direction.

I'll second Rob's comments, it's great to see this layout reimagined so skilfully.

 

It's making me want to get on with my own layout and perhaps make a start on the freight only twig I had sketched a couple of years ago.
