Peartree Green Dock- 00 Gauge dock layout

Hi all

Having modelled modern image for the last fifteen years, my eye has been caught recently by a number of Industrial locos namely Hornby's Peckett, Hattons Andrew Barclay etc.

Despite being a key worker and still working i have had the time to design myself a steam era dock layout which I've decided to call Peartree Green Dock.

Peartree Green Dock is a fictitious dock on the east side of the river Itchen near Southampton, the dock system receives trains from BR with the dock locos taking over at the boundary, occasionally a USA Dock tank or B4 locos venture into the dock system from time to time.

The layout is made from 15mm x 38mm Softwood frame with a 5.5mm Hardwood Ply top, the layout measures 7ft x 1.5ft.

Layout will be DCC with point motors from an accessory decoder.

Below are photos of the current progress on making the boards and planning of the track work along with two of the locos for the layout.

Thanks

Today I popped over to my local B&Q and bought the remaining ply I required.

A Few hours later we have a fiddle yard and the main board now has its backscenes.

just awaiting my delivery of track to start with the track laying.

Not bad for a rest day off from work!

Yesterday’s day off work was short lived as I was called in last minute to cover, though have had today off to carry on with the baseboards!

Some progress now with both boards now having all their backscene boards added and painted in a light grey.

Hopefully the order of track is due to be delivered today so I may be able to get some track down later today.

With all the woodwork being fairly complete and no more painting to do currently, I’ve moved the layout into my railway room onto the floor where I can work on it more, I have most of the track work now apart from four points which a friend is giving me but the current lockdown rules mean these will have to wait for a while.

The scratch built dock gate is in place temporarily as i needs finishing once my wills rending arrives from Derails, three JSModels low relief factory backs will act as the back scenes and a LCut Creative warehouse is on its way to act as the scenic break to the fiddle yard.

Does anyone know of any docks that may have had brick and stone buildings in the same complex?

My LCut Creative warehouse kit came today and I decided to have a go at building it.

Having woke up at 4:30am I wasn’t aiming to finish it but I’ve got pretty far and even managed to get a small coat of paint on it to test the paint.

Popped it on the layout to make sure the area id decided to put it fits and it’s a big thumbs up.

Looking great, and an amazingly quick build.  Looking at your first photograph of the point templates in place, my immediate thought was that you managed to start with a trackplan that it has taken me weeks of messing about with to arrive at!  However, your drawn trackplan revealed the extra track in front of the fiddle yard.  Nicely done!

I have amassed lots of photos of docks from all over the country.  Unless you intend to model a specific setting, I think you can safely mix stone, brick, wood, corrugated asbestos/iron building materials - there are plenty of inspiring layouts in the box files and micros forum which creatively mix them to great effect.

Hats off to you managing to squeeze some modelling inbetween your work shifts.

Thanks Steve, Appreciate the kind words.

It took me about three weeks to get the trackplan to one where i thought there would be maximum operational interest.

I never intended to have the extra track at the front of the fiddle yard but it made so much sense to do that instead of a full width fiddle yard that i didnt really need.

i shall see what i decide to do with the area in front of the fiddle yard, that may get some older stone warehouses instead of the brick ones. ill see how i feel.

Some more progress although only a small amount, the warehouse is now 90% finished just need to glaze it and put some kind of interior in it.

The dock gate was worked on today after the rendering arrived from Derails.

A self adhesive building was mocked up on the right hand end of the layout.

Hello all

Managed to do a fair bit on the layout today.

Put the first bits of track down, still awaiting a few of the points from a friend before I can go any further but it’s a start.

Put some 2.5mm cork down and did a test piece of DAS clay with cobblestones Made from a sett roller from a German company.

I kitbashed some left over parts from an LCut kit to make an office.

Thats all for now.

Some more work the last few days

Made a shunters building to go next to the loco neck, made from left over LCut Creative parts and a balsa roof, with some Wills or Ratio Guttering.

Some more Cobblestones have appeared, not sure if I'm too happy with them as they don't stand out very well, will have to try to paint them better and see if that improves the look of them.

Finally more work on the right hand back scene, this now has some buildings on the back scene with a gate through to the other part of the dock which is no longer rail connected, the gate will be weathered and some grass put around it to make it look derelict.

Today’s work, built a covered conveyor belt to cover the fiddle yard entrance and also give something for the warehouse to be connected to.

All the Backscenes have been painted in an acrylic powder blue and the right hand side low relief buildings put in place.

I’m looking forward to seeing and following the progress off Peartree Green Dock.

Like you I’ve been tempted and bought the 0-4-0 Peckett and the Rushton and I also have a 03 and a Sentinel presently sitting In boxes.

Thanks Terry, the fleet has grown more than the layout over the last month or so.

So far i have, Peckett (Laura) Andrew Barclay (to become Audrey, Named after my late Grandma) Austerity (to become Peartree No:1) USA tank 30064, a Heljan Class 05 which i may respray and the Ruston.

I'm hoping to get the points from my friend soon which will mean i can progress the track laying and then look at getting some more Laser Cut buildings.

No Photos or Video I'm afraid but my Heljan 05 traversed the whole main board this morning!

With a little bit of encouragement over the frogs which don't have power to them at the moment.

A big milestone! Now just to get autofrogs and set up the point motors.

Some more DAS clay has gone down at the back of the layout, this will probably become concrete instead of cobbles as I’m not happy with the cobbles, if successfully I think the cobbles will bite the bullet and be sanded.

Also added the base layer of cork for the crossings, DAS clay to follow once the track work is al finished and running okay.

Also added some Gaugemaster Fordhampton Dock Walling which I think looks very good, it’s only temporarily black tacked on to see how it looks and I’m quite happy with it.

A lot of work has been carried out recently, the DAS Clay has been painted in Tamiya Deck Tan as a base coat and will have some Tamiya Buff wiped over as some weathering.

The layout is now fully wired up and operational with the installation of the Autofrogs, SEEP point motors to be added soon with a yet unknown DCC accessory decoder.

Some more cork has gone down, in fact the last of the cork I’ve got so I’ll have to get some more at some point.

Hoping to get some ballast down in the next couple of days, four bags of Greenscene ballast have arrived.

Disaster struck this morning when I tried to run the layout it seemed that one of the points was electrically dead on the frog, so that meant the point had to come out i’m being replaced by a spare one.

on the good side some WWS grass clamps have been added and small ballast.

Today I built three legs for the layout and that meant that finally I don’t have to work on the floor to do anything on the layout either, Peartree Green has taken over from Ashbridge which is stored underneath the layout now.

No sooner had I put the layout up and run it did one of the Gaugemaster Autofrogs suffer from a component failure and went up in smoke, fair play to Gaugemaster they rang me and said to send it in for them to look into and they’ll send me a new one if it was component failure

Work continues on the layout, more concrete hard standing has gone down.

A Knightwing water tower and fuel tank have appeared which will be painted a weathered soon.

A Goods shed from in the greenwood laser has appeared and is starting to take shape.

My three JSModels kits have arrived too so they will be built over time.

oh and a possible exhibition for the layout in April 2021!
