letterspider
Another member Darius 43 has written up a really good description of his modifications here on RMWeb I have taken a different route and used the Hornby Maunsell R4534A as the donor which should be an easier build. letterspider
First off was to remove all glazing from the coach and front detailing. The handrails are not a problem but the whistle and windscreen wiper on my model could not be removed without breaking As my modelling skills and equipment require more compromises than the pros, I have taken a few shortcuts here and there Piping added to front (most of it) With the centre glazing I don't have the skills and equipment to cut plastikard well enough (or at least not as well as Darius 43!). The technique I use is to cut a piece of acrylic to the right size - here being test fit Then I score on the borders of the window using a scalpel - one of the sides I have highlighted in blue ] As the helping hands hold everything steadily I can use a flat edged paint brush (ideally a brand new one with no frays) to apply the paint. What happens is that the surface tension will pull the paint up to and into the line scored into the acrylic and so achieve a straight line. 2
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted May 17, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 17, 2020 I like your technique of scribing the frame lines on the glazing so the paint runs into a neat edge. Gives a true flush glazed result. Cheers Darius
letterspider
Hi Darius thanks for replying. I don't think my conversion will go as quickly as yours as I don't know if I have all the parts at hand. I am interested in the livery you chose. MY interpretation of it was that it is just the SR livery that has faded into that weird colour. So I am going to stick with that colour as it matches very closely the Heljan weedkilling tankers which I have - I will post up the colour comparisons shortly I have also drawn up designs for the logos on the coach sides and I am asking Railtec if they can do the transfers for me. If Steve is able to do it I will let you know. Steve - if you are listening in - please read your inbox! I will definitely buy a set of these decals From Railtec if they do them. Cheers Darius

It seems all the experience and knowledge of modellers on this topic would be easier to access if centralised - and there is a lot of it
letterspider
Front window glued on and handrails reattached. I have also added a cab from Replica Railways with an attendant. I have no idea how the interior of the carriage is modified but here is my interpretaion of it. The relay cabinets are my own 3D prints done on a Makerbot clone while the IBC tank pallets are very fine resin prints from eBay. 3
