Interlaken and Wengen

There is still a public commercial (paid entry) model railway display about 0.8 km to the south of Interlaken West station at the top of the Heimwehfluh Funicular - see

Yes it is sort of like a Swiss version of "Deliberately Old Fashioned" O gauge (Spur 0). In normal times the model railway runs at 11.00 and 15.00 each day. The funicular dates from 1906 - and doesn't look like much has changed. Visiting is a bit of an interesting experience as it isn't in the most salubrious part of Interlaken.

To add to pictures of the east end of Interlaken Ost, here are a few in the Ballenberg Dampf Bahn compound and shed contents taken on 20th September 2019.

A very worthwhile preservation group, worthy of support.

It may be the least salubrious part of Interlaken, but it's probably more salubrious than the most salubrious parts of [insert town in another country here]. We had a cheaper self-catering place near there last year, and I've lived in far worse places.

There used to be a model railway in a building near to Interlaken West. (Rugenparkstrasse?)

Anyone know what happened to it?

Are you referring to the Om layout that was originally next to the station?

The SBB financed a nice building for it but went bust after a short time, the building becoming a beer warehouse.

It is now in Meiringen. A bus driver and his son are rebuilding the layout in the second floor of a garage. I arranged a visit for our tour group in 2016. I missed that but went in 2017. The son speaks English.

If in the area, I would recommend a visit.

Interlaken photo survey part 2, all taken at the east end of the station

DSC_0399.JPG

Hi David, loving the pictures, brings back happy memories and great for modelling reference. Do you or indeed any of the members of this forum know of a dimensioned drawing of the check rails of the type used on the point in the extreme lower left of this photo as opposed to the more conventional check rails in the lower right please. Any information, including their reason for use on standard and narrow gauge, would be gratefully received as I would like to reproduce them in CAD and 3D print them for my layout. I think it would make it stand out as more continental. Thanks, Simon

These are all of the BOB part of the station. The sidings and trackwork on this side of the station was rationalized in the last 10 years or so with run round loops removed and the number of sidings reduced.

In "The Third Man", Harry Lime (Orson Welles) asks what 700 years of peace had given Switzerland. His answer was, incorrectly, "cuckoo clocks". My answer, based on these photos,  would be left luggage lockers. Such a useful service when travelling. In recent times I have so often been stuck at a station somewhere when I could have had a pleasant few hours exploring a city but for being encumbered with a suitcase.

The Swiss have always been good with luggage. I dont know if they still do it but I do remember using the luggage transit service. Check in your bags at your UK airport and forget about them. They are delivered to your room at your hotel at the other end. The same on the way back.and this works even when your Swiss transit involves a number of trains and a bus or two. Absolutely brilliant and if I remember right it cost about 10 francs
