Halfords car paints updates

Recommended Posts

Hi All. Some years ago, someone very helpfully did a chart listing the various Halfords car paints and the equivalent of that colour in model form which is brilliant. However, as the years move on cars come and go. Some colours are no longer used on cars. It is understandable that some of the Halfords spray colour paints may also be discontinued.

I have found at least three colours that no longer exist in the list below. They are Rover damask red or the Vauxhall gazelle beige and VW Pargas Blue.

I am currently in the middle of painting a gauge 3 railcar into blood and custard. Upon a visit to Halfords I was unable to find/get the Rover damask red or the Vauxhall gazelle beige. It is worthy of note you do not see many beige cars around today as it was a colour of the 1970-80’s.

So, my question is has anyone done an updated version of the list below?

If yes, then any help with regards the blood and custard colours would be greatly appreciated. I know Railmatch do the paints however the paint batches can be a bit poor on quality control whereas the quality control on Halfords is generally a lot better.

Any help ideas or tips greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Mark

Looks like Halfords will mix any colour so perhaps you can order obsolete colours?

Companies like this can mix any colour, there is no such thing as an obsolete colour, whether you can get it in the formulation you require is the tricky bit.

Halfords seem to be discontinuing all their old colours,    Quite a lot are discounted to £3 if you buy on line and collect from the store.  I wanted some silver for my Rover 25 but there was no stock, however they had blue for the other car for £3.  All these  Paints are available on eBay but its £15 a can.   There are probably stocks of Car Plan and the like paints around when the shops re open in a couple of weeks but long term the availability of cheap car spray paint for models  doesn't look good.

It's not surprising really, far fewer people are doing their own minor car repairs nowadays, whether bodywork or mechanical. Shame is that Halfords do pay lip service to the idea that people buy their paints for other purposes but they don't bother to make it easy- for example they don't seem to publish a colour chart.

Someone may prove me wrong on that, but i couldn't find one recently.

Of course there are other sellers, but Halfords have been the handy high street source for a long time and it will be a pity to see that end.

(Land) Rover Coniston Green is also discontinued. I had to get some from a specialist and it was only available in cellulose, not acrylic. Over a grey primer, it is a match for Southern Olive Green, but I use it over a black primer and it perfectly matches US Pullman Green.

Thanks guys it interesting reading your comments and input. I would lie to find a list from halfords in excel format so i can see what current colours are still matching the original list i had in the opening post.

I use these as they do Commercial colours as well.  They will mix the colour you want.  If you have a branch near to you give them a call.  £13.00 a large can mixed while you wait takes about 15 mins . They will show you the paint before it's put in the can. so you can see if its the shade you want.   https://groveshop.co.uk/stores

Yes. You are correct.  Halfords are significantly reducing  the premixed range cans, especially the Rover ones and earlier models in general. Premixed paints for many modern cars will still be available in the stores.

As far as I know any of the range can be obtained (by car model ref at least), but they will not be mixed in most stores and will need ordering. This will make them more expensive of course.

Currently I use Halfords rover Primula (over grey) and Ford Rosso red (over brown) for  Crimson and Cream

Looks OK to my eyes but the Primula doesn't have a lot of colour depth

I've not tried the Primula, but have used your Rosso Red combination and it is very close to the Railmatch BR Crimson shade.

I gave up with Railmatch..the spray cans are very variable..paint consistency, nozzles clogging up, drying matt or gloss when it was supposed to be the other way around

Haven't had chance to poke around the whole site but these folks have an awful lot of spray paint on offer, prices look pretty reasonable with P&P if you're buying more than a couple of cans.  Extensive stocks of the "hycote' rattle cans recently discussed here for example.

That is disappointing. I had notice the discounted price when I was looking for Rover Damask Red (Midland) and Rover Midnight Blue (S&DJR) just after Easter. They weren't available for order from my local Halfords; the nearest was Maidenhead, a ten mile drive up the M4 which at that point I couldn't justify to myself. Now I'd be happy to make the trip but they're no longer available to order.

We still need a BR blue. I use rail match spray cans for blue, but the Halfords are better value and last longer I've found.

Go to a paint factor then!, I can think of three I used to use in Escafeld, although they have probably closed down in the intervening millenniums, Brown Brothers was one.

Always amazes me in halfords that the continue with the old especially BL colours.  Colours like tara green and arum white probably exist on less than twenty vehicles today

Similar experience here. Had a couple of spray varnish disasters. I now just have a small selection of pots used as a base for mixing paint for touching in.

Probably enough people buying them for other uses.

That's why they are being discontinued. There will still be a range covering popular current vehicles.
