Triang starter(?) set diesels

My memory tells me that Triang produced a 4 wheel diesel shunter, possibly in a starter set. I recall that it was a "steeple" cab type (but not the same as the steeple cab electric) and may have been in red or yellow. I have tried finding references to this but have found nothing. Does such a thing exist?

Hi Stu.

The Primary Series from 1959 included a red, with a special logo, version of the Steeple Cab electric loco, with a plastic 2 part pantograph.

This is often missing totally, or the cross beam "pick up" is missing, but the "diamond" assembly is still present.

The first 4 wheel Diesel would be the "North British" shunter.  This was also in the main range in BR green, as R.559.

The most common electric starter set colour is a mid blue. No numbers or logos.

RS.71 Train Set (Electric). This used the same box as the RS.43 Clockwork Set, but with 'RS.71' round yellow self adhesive labels over the 'RS.43' printed roundels.

The electric loco uses the 'Nellie' type chassis, first introduced for the Steeple Cab, and also used on the electric versions of the 'Top Tank' Starter Set Steam Loco, also made in Clockwork.

The elecric loco can reverse, and therefore has a coupling at each end. The Box Top illustration is of the Clockwork Loco.

In Clockwork, I have also seen it in red, blue, and a light green...I think there are other colours too...

The Clockwork loco is non reversing, and only runs cab first, so only the one coupling is fitted.

Some have BR late crest emblems, but all have no number.

RS.43 Train Set (Clockwork) C1962 Blue Loco.

Next up would be the "continental" (Swedish) diesel loco, electric only. I think mainly yellow?

The North British loco had the body altered later, to accommodate a can motor, and then looks a bit like a Barclay shunter.

Hi Garry.

The Primary Series coaches were an updated version of the 7inch BR coach. They were made in red, or green, two different R. Numbers,  polystyrene plastic, with grey roofs.

Primary Set RP.A

0-6-0 Reversing Clockwork Saddle Tank Loco and two Red Primary Series coaches, with a Circle of Series 3 Track. C1959.

There were two wagons in the Primary Series, both "integral" models, with no separate chassis.

Primary Set RP.B

0-6-0 Reversing Clockwork Diesel Shunter Loco and two Grey Primary Series Open Wagons, and a Green Van, with a Circle of Series 3 Track. Later Style of Box..

There was a green Van, with a grey roof, and an open wagon, usually in grey, or a slightly greeny grey.

Both were based on Jouef models of continental wagons.

Other starter sets used the R.10 open wagon in various colours, with no printing, the R.11 closed van, likewise.

Some sets also had a non printed version of the short R.16 brake van.

EDIT to add...See photos in my post above of sets RS.71 (Electric) and RS.43 (Clockwork).

Hi Sarah,

I remember the green coaches in the sets but not the red. I also remember the open wagon but not the covered one.  Two reasons, probably one being those sets did not interest me, and two, too old lol.

There were diesel shunters in Black, and Red, the R.253 Dock Shunter, and the same model, but with the Transcontinental logo and without buffers was made in Yellow, the R.353 Switcher. The red and yellow ones were used in sets. They used the 4 wheel motor bogie from the Transcontinental Bo-Bo diesel switcher and double ended Bo-Bo diesel and electric locos. Triang even made a small clip on snowplough for it.

I thought the steeple cab was used in starter sets with a circle of series 3 track and either 2 very short passengers coaches or a couple of open wagons. The pantograph was a non working one if remember.

Garry

It was but only with a maroon body, as R252. It was in 1959 that Triang sold it in the RP.C Passenger Set and RP.D Goods Set. They didn't call them starter sets, preferring to call them the Primary Series.

The green steeple cab, R.254, with the same operating pantograph as used on the Double-ended Transcontinental electric loco R.257, the EM2 R.351, and the Sydney Suburban EMU R450 & R.452, was never sold in a set, and was the only OHLE Tri-ang loco that wasn't, at some point in its life, included in a set.

Yes, they did, it was R853.  Based on a Swedish design, it was only available new in a set.

Hi Moxy.

Thanks.

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of.

I have the red version of this. One thing to remember about it though, is that although it has an electric motor, it is only 6v not 12v.

I don't recall the control levers having extra holes in the back of the cab*, but then it was my brother's. It soon became a saddle tank. Elder brother thought it was horrible: 1. because it is and 2. it's a diesel!

* The one in BR black livery.

Hi all

this is my Christmas 1968 set, NZC3, reassembled for its 50th, and another green clockwork loco.
