RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted January 21, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2021 Splendid stuff Alex. A quick question.......or two.. How fine is the spray from the Halfords Matt aerosol ? Did you use any weathering powders on the models before spraying it I would look to use it to seal weathering powders. If the Varnish is too thick a spray, its too wet and the colours of the weathering powders are lost. I currently use Humbrol Matt Acrylic Varnish but it can be tricky to source. Dullcote did not work for me. I'd welcome your thoughts. Rob.

I have used Humbrol matt spray cans in the past but with generally poor results. This new VMS Supplies Varnish I'm using however can be brushed on with the same effect as airbrushing as it requires a wet coat that is able to then self-level. I would say it's probably not ideal to use to seal weathering powders if you aren't airbrushing it as obviously it would just move it around as you're painting it on. In terms of aerosol matt varnishes, I've had superb results in the past with the non-aerosol versions of both Tamiya acrylic and Mr Color lacquer varnishes when airbrushed, both of which are available in spray can form so they would be my recommendations. This stuff especially or this stuff if you want a bit more protection Cheers Edited January 21, 2021 by Locksley 2
RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted January 21, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 21, 2021 Thanks Alex. I'm clearly addled this morning, thinking you had sprayed the B4 with Halfords Matt. Doh! They are delightful little models though. I can see more Varnish research is called for. Rob 1

Popular Post Locksley
Well, I think that could have gone much worse! The AK snow stuff is essentially just glorified polyfilla but it is very fine and properly white. I also painted up the letters I printed off on my Photon a few months back, and gave the facia boards a few more coats of satin black which I think makes it all look quite profeshnul like. 25 5
bgman
You've certainly done it justice, especially using AK products which in my opinion if used correctly will always give excellent results.

RMweb Gold NHY 581 Posted January 27, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 27, 2021 What a difference, Alex. Do they come as individual plates or as a sheet ? I only ask as I have three B4s to sort out. Rob.

If you have a few B4s to do it might be worth dropping @railtec-models a quick msg and maybe see if he'd do you just the smokebox gubbins
Popular Post Locksley
Finished off a Parkside Conflat S this evening as I'm getting a tad bored of my current 3 BR era wagons This is the first of the Peco boxings I've built. Nice that they now come with BR transfers but the only marking diagram you get is LNER... think it might be time for Peco to redo the old Parkside instructions. I could only find a few reference pics of Conflat S wagons, all on Paul B's site, and I could find literally zero photos of a DX container online, just some simple line drawings which did at least sort of help with lettering them. I did it slightly different on both sides as you're only ever going to see it from one side anyway. Also been playing around with the LEDs on blue.... I suspect the guard and fireman are discussing how the bloody hell the stores staff are gonna get that car unloaded without a crane... Popular Post Locksley
And the second wagon is done, a BR Medfit. Again painted up differently on each side, one as a late 1960s example, and the other as a 1980s engineers ZAV, neither represents a specific wagon but uses elements from various Paul Bartlett photos. 19 1 7

SteveyDee68
Late to the party, but I really like the idea of painting up the two wagon sides differently. That really works on an Inglenook puzzle, giving "twice the bang for the buck" and letting two eras be modelled with the same set of stock. Popular Post Locksley
Picked up a fancy camera yesterday as an early birthday pressie. A Nikon D7000, albeit a heavily used but still fully functional one, along with a Nikkor 60mm Macro lens. Couldn't resist giving it a go on the layout. I still need to fiddle with some settings but the results are pretty damn good so far. 23 1

Popular Post Locksley
Garnswllt had its first public showing last Saturday. Our club, the Sheffield Model Railway Enthusiasts had a fairly low-key open day in the church the clubrooms occupy the upstairs rooms of. It wasn't too widely publicized as we weren't sure how it would go, and indeed whether we would even be able to go ahead with it, but in the end it all went remarkably well. We had a decent trickle of punters over course of the day, thankfully most wearing masks and adhering to the usual guidelines. The open day was mainly in lieu of our usual annual exhibition held in March being obviously cancelled for the last 2 years, but I think it went well enough that it's something we would consider again. I was in two minds about taking Garnswllt, mainly from an operating point of view. I figured having to actually operate a very limited Inglenook layout for 6 or so hours would be rather mind numbing, however on the contrary I found it to be thoroughly enjoyable. The layout and stock performed wonderfully and without a single hiccup. It's actually made me realise a few areas I'd like to improve/add to on the layout. I came away with a few thoughts: 1. The layout needs dummy point levers, they're actually quite conspicuous in their absence. A set of rather nice ones are on order. 2. It needs a larger fiddle extension on the left hand side. The current one was added with serious space constraints but I no longer have those now the layout has been permanently moved to another room. An extension roughly long enough to allow a 'full' train (well, a loco and 3 wagons!) to actually run off-scene would add quite a lot of operational interest. 3. I think I'm a bit bored of the plain sky backscene. I've ordered a winter ID backscene so I can have just a little bit in the way of distant hills poking up behind the embankment that the layout sits on. I'm hoping this will make the layout feel like it's in a real location, rather than sort of floating somewhere. 4. I finally need to get around to improving the lighting. This was discussed earlier in the thread - the strip of LEDs along the front and side of the layout cast unnatural shadows - I'm looking into adding an MDF 'roof' to the layout and moving the LED strips on to there which should solve the issue, and will give me a bit more control over the ambience. 5. More of a general observation - I realised around 10 mins before the show opened that with a little artistic license I actually have just about enough locos, rolling stock, and vehicles to change the era of the layout almost hourly, starting off around the 1930s, progressing through to the 1980s. I found this kept operating interesting, it's something I want to explore a bit more, and flesh out my stock with this in mind. marc smith
Ah, that first outing for a new layout. Actually, it is usually an invaluable trip. It's good that it was a low-key sort of event too - you wouldn't want its' premier exhibition to be a huge exhibition, with hoards of onlookers. This way, you can learn those invaluable lessons as to what needs "tweaking" or modifying. So you probably made a wise decision to take Garnswllt to your club event first. I know many people feel that a simple Inglenook could get boring to operate for a whole show - but I find that time usually goes far more quickly than you'd anticipate. Chatting to exhibition goers can be enjoyable and rewarding. As you say, some swapping of stock can also help add interest and make things more interesting for operators too. This layout is superb, and despite being a simple design, it oozes atmosphere, and demands attention and observance of details. As you say, a backscene might lend it even more a sense of "place". If it were my layout, I think I'd be tempted to place a screen in front of the fiddle - just to add a sense that the train is going "somewhere", and to hide those stock swapping moments. Perhaps I'd even be tempted not to use the ubiquitous over-bridge to conceal the exit - maybe just a couple of trees, or the end of a building? Anyhow, that's no criticism by the way - just a thought (I do have a few, now & then! lol). Superb sir, just superb 1 1
