BR Exhibition coaches

Recommended Posts

I was looking for some pictures of BR's Rail Ambassador train and I came across some pictures of these weird and wonderfully liveried coaches, so I thought that I'd start a thread about them. Feel free to add your own pics or any info that you might have about them.

This is what used to be the Rail Ambassador train which seems to have later had the logo painted over and used for something else.

I think that these two might actually be from a different train as the livery seems to be slightly different.

Interesting to see these photos. My old boss at one time , Ron Shirley, had previously run TrainEx and gave me a lot of papers and photos which I turned into two articles in the HMRS Journal. There had previously been article in Model Railway Constructor.

Here are a few photos, nice period pieces.

There was another private operation, Rea Mobile Marketing, and Ron introduced me to the owner, who also gave me some photos. His trains were based on older stock, as shown below.

The two businesses were taken over by BR.

Kensington Olympia, where the Be Stiff Tour train is seen above, was a place where the trains were often photographed.

"They look like they have been converted from Thompson BGs??"

Correct

And thanks to those who have posted other photos I had never seen.

Yes, the train was reliveried for each exhibition. Some were single company tours and others such as Trainex were mutli-company.

bringing another couple of threads on exhibition coaches in

I personally am still interested in learning more about a set of at least 3 siphons in use as 'the radio show' exhibition train - I've only see 3 pictures and do not have copyright.

Yeah after posting all the pictures it seems that the blue/white coaches just had a different logo on them depending on the customer.

Thanks for that exhaustive list, it should come in handy for anyone who wants to model these trains. And it seems that there already is a thread about the VIX.

Funny my thread should come up again.  I was enjoying reading through this new thread when I discovered it earlier this afternoon.  Strangely enough, a photo of said VIX turned up awhile later in a different thread, in black with large double arrows on the doors, in a train which, IIRC had nothing to do with the Exhibition stock.  Think said livery was to do with its former existence?  The picture is on here somewhere, but unfortunately I know not where.  Hopefully someone will remember.

Update .  Found it - the picture of the black ferry van with the large logos, a David Larkin picture, appears on page 2 of the 'Hornby VIX FerryVans. Detailing and the new Railtec transfers' thread.  Sorry - tried to post a link but failed miserably.  HTH.

Best wishes,

Paul

This is spooky. I started the thread about the Stiff Records tour  nearly 7 years ago. I haven't thought about it for a while but yesterday afternoon I was sitting on a station watching trains near where I now live in France and my mate and I were talking about buying houses during the mortgage famine in 78. I told him the story of seeing the Stiff Tour train at Huddersfield. He was amazed. Then tonight up pops this link.  Some good stuff on here.

Re the LNER BGs I should have read the post more carefully. In fact there were only these three vehicles in the Rea Mobile Marketing fleet, though later he chartered vehicles from BR. His three vehicles were D245 LNER no 70491/BR no M99628, D327 LNER no 70592/BR no M99626 and D327 LNER no 70630/BR no M99627. The first was teak. the others described as deal. All three ended up with preservation groups but I don't know if they still survive.

I only saw an exhibition train once, would have been circa 1986 at Edinburgh Waverley. Didn't take any pictures, and have no memory of what was being advertised. Was parked in one of the east facing platforms and the platform itself was fenced off.

Fortunately could see the coaches from an adjacent platform, as that was empty. Remember having to look for the numbers, as they were on the solebars rather than the bodyside.

Right, well I'm guessing that they were these three so perhaps some LNER experts can work out what they are from the Lot Numbers.

I used to see them quite often when going places. Always parked up in a platform with bored looking people waiting for customers.

They would have one or two in the Exhibition livery (like the Bachmann model) then you would have about three or four scruffy BR Blue vans with the doors open and a ramp to access them. Probably not the impression they were trying to achieve.
