I lived in Belfast from 1978 to 1983 and used to go on train trips with my Grandad from York Road to Larne and back on these trains - just for the train ride. Unfortunately sometimes skilful builds can be let down by a poor paint job in the end, but this is absolutely first class. Sharp, crisp straight lines, accurate colours and great paint finish. When I met my future Other Half her home in Belfast was close to the main line near Adelaide. I saw and very much heard these thumping up and down in the late 1970s, got a few photos somewhere. I've just leaned over and shown her your photos, knowing she has no interest in railways....... "Recognise this?" "Oh yes, definitely!" Must be the first time her eyes haven't glazed over when shown a railway pic! David Jackson Posted March 10, 2021 Share Posted March 10, 2021 I watched and listened to the video clip with interest. Some time ago I too fitted a Class 205 "thumper" sound decoder to my 80 Class DEMU as being better than nothing. I was totally disappointed with the sound. It just did not sound like an 80 Class, it was just noisy and the horns were nothing like an 80 Class. In the end I got the decoder reblown with a different loco sound, and gave up with 80 Class sound. More recently I got a spare decoder reblown with Wheeltappers 80 Class sound, and what a difference. Engine noise is excellent, and a selection of horns that actually sound like 80 Class horns. I am sorry to have to say that the sounds in the video clip remind me of my own experience with Class 205 sounds, and do not do justice to what is otherwise an excellent model. Following my experience with the Class 205 sound, I did some research into Class 205s, and found that although the Class 205 and 80 Class share the same technology, they really don't sound the same. Coupled with the fact that the two classes seem to be driven using different driving techniques, the sounds are just chalk and cheese. 1 1 Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Good job then. Did you (or do you) work for The Hunslet Engine Co? I visited York Road back in 2001/2 when I was at ATOC and got to know Ian Campbell who was Chief Engineer at the time and still is I believe. The DEMU's used the 4SRKT engine which I spent a bit of time on back in the 1960s on the SR. Were those engines and generators etc retained or replaced as part of the refurb? Hi Andy, Thanks for taking the trouble to post the picture of the engine room. That looks like an EE 4SRKT with a different govenor - I recognise the hand water pump! It looks like the cooler group is in the same place as the Hampshire Units - did you retain the centrufugal clutch driven mechanical radiator fan in the roof? Dowding and Mills sounds right for the generator/Traction Motor re-furb, they did a lot for BR. One of the Hampshire Units (Thumpers) 1129 was experimentally fitted with a high speed Dorman V12 much smaller than the EE engine but a bit more powerful (I think) but much, much noisier! Spent too much time checking temperatures and outputs on 1129 in service back in 1964/5 which explains my slight deafness - comes in handy some times! Yes we kept the clutch drive for the fan - the biggest issue was the right angle drive gears. It was a good job and I enjoyed it - we had some good night in Belfast as well when we went for meetings - I am sure the Crown pub is still there not so sure about the red Panda Chinese.
