Falkland Yard Ayrshire

Living in Prestwick. l am only 1/2 mile from Falkland yard which is just north of Ayr.  Being my "local" l ve kept an eye out for photos and general information of stock and locos seen there over the years. One of my interests is the 1966/7 period just where the corporate blue livery began to appear.

In this period Falkland Yard was visited by a number of unusual classes that you would not normally associate with the Ayrshire coast.

The Rail Scot web site has photos of class 45s in green working freight traffic north with a Clayton assisting inside. Derby  Sulzers web site confirms that the 45s were often used in filling turns and for a short period even had a diagram where one worked stock to Largs in the early morning, and then ran

to Falkland Yard to collect stock and work back to Glasgow.

Another interesting photo shows class 50 D446 working a mineral train in to Falkland yard in 1968. These two examples show that Falkland was host to many non Scottish  classes, however try as l might, i ve only found one class 40 visiting the area, in this case Ayr which was in 1968 l think on a special working (Rail tour l think)

The Rail Scot web site did have some photos taken around this time showing various traction on the Airport fuel branch, l m sure the photos included class 17s , 37 and 47, however search as l might on the site l can not locate them now.

Does anyone one of any other class 40 or class 47 working into Falkland yard around these times?

Cheers

Bob C

We have just one pic of it, a little out of your period and I recall photoshopping a lot of litter off the grass!

I do remember in my spotting days there being Class 40s (usually only one per visit) on Ayr shed and I always assumed they had worken in on freight to the yard.

It would be 1976-9 I guess, not that often though, I wish I could have made it up to Scotland more. Unfortunately my spotting books are lost somewhere........
