Changing fully automatic BSIs for semi-automatics with jumpers (or vice versa) shouldnt be an issue, especially if you've already got the unit in bits to fit bike racks. 

 

It's already been done on 150s, some were converted to 3 cars around 1990 by splitting sets and sticking the extra vehicles on 2 car sets. It was intended to be done again for Northern but they went for 153s attached to PRM-compliant 150/2s instead, with some moderate platform extensions.

Not fitting RETB to the 153, and using them between two Class 156 sets, would mean all Fort William services would have to be 5-car, and as most run through to or from Mallaig, those trains too. As keefer says, 3-car 156 sets were in the past formed for WHL summer services (as they were Corkerhill-allocated units, inevitably they occasionally ended up on Glasgow area suburban diagrams, with interesting consequences for docking at Glasgow Central !). So adding the 153 within the 156 would not be an issue, however if the Oban services are to become 4-car 156 sets, with the 153 workings confined to the Fort William route and inserted within an 156, that introduces two different types of set in what is already a small fleet of RETB-fitted units, leading to diagramming and operational complications. So it would seem logical to fit the 153 with RETB and diagram them on those services needing the extra capacity.

Perhaps they could develop some system whereby they could adapt the length of the train as services develop, such as adding vehicles in summer and removing them in winter, for example.

 

They could develop some of them to carry freight only, whilst the rest had passenger seats. To avoid the need to worry about how many engines each vehicle needed, they could have them all un-powered and have one special vehicle at the front with a big main engine instead.

 

When it gets to its destination, that vehicle at the front with the big main engine could be removed and put on the other end for the train to return.

 

How about that as an idea?

You could save a lot of hassle and infrastructure by putting a driver's cab into one (or more) of the unpowered vehicles and remotely controlling the main traction power generation unit.

The trouble is with that idea is some bright spark will suggest ALL vehicles having cabs in them, in case they split the train in parts and then noting they will all need to have their own diesel engine fitted just in case, thereby obviating the need for one vehicle with a big engine.

Before you know it someone will think about making them run in all sorts of multiples and then as they're diesel units- they'll just call them diesel multiple units, or DMU for short. You KNOW it would happen.

Rather than dragging heavy and not especially efficient diesel engines around, you could always use some form of external power supply.

I realise there's a limit to how far we can push this, but how about a windmill on the roof that generates power to drive traction motors. We can make these entirely green AND dispel the scientific notions of perpetual motion and the creation of energy.

Or alternatively, we could go back to horse drawn carts. This has the advantage of pleasing the green movement AND everyone on the route will have the best rhubarb on the planet.

didn’t realise there were 5 different liveries . The scenery of Scotland. Makes it even more of a no brainier

If this modified 153 will not be running on its own but always with a 156 in some configuration, it is just a glorified BG.  So if it is going to be brought out by Hornby, should they keep the price down by not motorising it, or does it need the power so it can run on a hypothetical branch up Creag Meagaidh?

Rapido said (when talking about a "cabbage car", which is an F40 with the engine removed and converted to a baggage car hence the name - cab/baggage) that it was cheaper for them to motorise it rather than develop an unpowered chassis, the costs of which would have to be passed on in the purchase price. So they sold it with the standard powered F40 chassis.

 

The development and manufacturing cost of unpowered vehicles isn't noticably less than that of locos, but the customers expect to pay considerably less for them.

The ScotRail 153 will operate on its own, but only ECS, mostly between Glasgow QS and Eastfield. Most model DMUs are sold without passengers onboard so are out of the box ECS ready!
