Recommended Posts

With another lockdown on us the final details for Loch Dochard in the post and two of SMS models 77L box storage baseboards sets to hand here's the first one... introducing 'Bank House Colliery' under construction. Three days of track laying, kit building, kit bashing and painting so far.

Thankyou very much @Andrew D.

Progress has been slow this week with the return to work but some ballasting and light installation has been done. Some phone photos of progress.

I managed to ruin the original planned back scene with a dark grey cloudy sky and so had to use the other which is very pale and just looks like a white sheet of paper.

Great pics as always Karl. Would you mind telling me what you use for the ‘dirty’ ballast and the platform surface? The effect you’ve achieved is excellent and one I’d like to copy emulate.

Cheers!

Thanks very much. When I started this I never imagined I'd ever be asked how I had done something, but no problem at all! The platform on Loch Dochard was a laser cut wood kit, once assembled I sprayed it matt black, then cover it in a thin layer of glue and applied a thin layer of a mix of ballast (woodland scenics fine black ash, medium brown ballast and some genuine crushed (almost to a powder) granite), I just mixed that in a proportion that I thought looked ok and spread it thinly on the glue.

For the track, the ballasting is exactly the same as the station but the proportions are made to be more black so less grey put in, I apply this by mixing in ballast magic powder and spraying with water. Once that's dry to get the mucky ballast that I've used on the shed and Loch Dochard to indicate where engines stand for a while and more liberally across the colliery it is 'Hattons Oil Spill Solution' from Hattons Model Railways. It's a bag of grey powder that you apply where you want it then fix with water mixed with PVA, once that's dry you brush on the black liquid you get in the pack and leave it to dry and that's it. (On the colliery I have used some some weathering powders to try to vary the tone a little afterwards) I've used it for the shed, Loch Dochard and the Colliery and still have more than 3/4 of the stuff left so you get plenty!

My Dad has taken the opportunity of Lockdown to build himself a box file layout using 2 files, 1 for the scene and one for the fiddle yard and one end of the run round. Here's a few photos of a very busy 009 station!

The Easter weekend allowed some progress on this which is being built primarily in anticipation of the England's and Double Fairlie's. The currently under construction 009 layout which currently just has the aim of 'looking welsh'. Here's a few rather grainy phone photos.IMG_20210405_163012651edit.jpg.90b2b54d93133ba2509478af5c4aef96.jpg

Some photos of the latest mini layout using an SMS 22ltr box baseboard, although this will have a number of optional left hand boards eventually for representing different regions. The station shelter also has versions in 3, soon to be 4, regional colours. The first left hand will be Cambrianesque with the second more Scottish as a scratch built trestle bridge and some of the exquisite Braeside models But and Ben buildings waiting a plan(s).

Forgive the garden in the background!

I hope everyone is well and enjoying modelling!

Looking good, although I'm impressed the 14xx & Autocoach have been turned without a turntable in sight :P

I don't think you need to make excuses for your garden - outdoor photos always look brilliant. I especially enjoy the first photo with the sky and trees over the bridge - just need to edit out the fence somehow.

Oh, and the multi-location identity idea is pretty neat too of course! How much needs to be switched between locations, and how long does it take?

Thanks @TechnicArrow, it's amazing how tight a space they can turn in... :dance_mini:

Yeah, that fence doesn't lend itself to being a background does it! Perhaps I'll carry it out into the field and do something on day. (The model, not the fence!)

Well, currently I have the waiting shelter painted and postered in 4 different regions but it definitely is helped with the pagoda being there too in the western set up so I think I'll come up with a second building for each. I'm just after something that 'looks good' rather than is a authentic replication of each regions practice. Particularly when I worked out that I couldn't fit a working signal on as it was either too tall above the baseboard for the storage box, or too deep under the base board. So it's basically lift the buildings and station name boards up and drop the replacements in so it's literally seconds. Although I think it's going to look at it's best in the western set up with 14xx, 64xx, Collett Goods, Dukedogs, Railcar etc.

The left hand board will be more region specific and will taken a couple of minutes to switch over when done as it'll had male/female power connections etc. The intention though is each one will just be one length of track through scenery, so the western one will be a trestle bridge over a river and a bit of scenery, the Scottish one will be running on an embankment with the but and bens. The southern is more tricky as I have intended to build a larger 'Blackgang' with a Bembridge inspired track plan (I even have a small Faller turntable kit waiting) but that needs more space than I have currently.

With the Double Fairlie's arriving some quick photos of Merddin and Livingston Thompson on 'Llwybr Mwdlyd'. Not great photos but hopefully get it out into some daylight over the next few weeks.

Good evening everyone,

Inspired by the models in the micros and box file thread and with a week off work I decided to have a go at a small wharf side box file layout and thought I'd share my efforts here. So this is 'Lockdown Wharf'.

The warehouse are from the excellent JSM models, the boat is a very good Langley kit with a scencraft crane and wills sheets used for the canal banking and the walls. The bridge parapets are from the 'Greenwood laser' range and whilst a fine kit I think may be a bit big on this. The big Bagnall in the background is one of my 6 or 7 models from the Hardy range.

Happy modelling everyone!

Karl

That's a lovely little scene.  What are the overall dimensions of your wharf box file?

With my own attic layout taking ages to progress, I'm tempted to have a go at a wrapping paper box layout, based on the type of scenario you present.  The JS Models warehouses look good, although because of their height, I'd have to make them removable, so that the layout could still fit in a wrapping paper box.  I'm assuming that they'd be robust enough, with some sort of back on them.

Also, how have you formed the cobbles on the quayside?

Hi @Dungrange, sorry for the delay in replying. Thanks for the compliment! It is a standard A4 box file which when everything is place in it is about 30cm tall (the backscene behind the two warehouses is just the inside of the box lid)but the buildings are all loose so can be packed away so you're thought of keeping them removable is exactly what I have done. I use small velcro tabs on them and the back to hold them upright when it's being used. They're very robust being 3mm wood sheets and when assembled are very very sturdy as there is a floor piece for each level right across and there is also an internal frame that you build the frontage on. They feel very solid when built and there is no issue with them being removable. Very easy kits to build too.

The cobbles are simple, I bought them. They are noch 60314 'Cobblestone Place' which is made from granite and then cut to size, it can be awkward to get them to not show the joins but patience is a virtue there it's just cutting them right. They can be cut with scissors too.

I hope that helps!

I love the wooden platform. May as I ask if it’s a kit or have you scratch built it?

Good afternoon @Newfish, it is a few kits put together from Torri_laser (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123263799513?hash=item1cb31850d9:g:4LMAAOSwjW5bU7Xp) They do do a platform kit (which I have one of) but I actually decided to use a few of their coal stage kits but without the upright supports/fences and put I think it's 3 of them together with matches stuck along the front to provide the lip. The whole lot was then treated with some left over fence weather proofing primer from doing the garden fence. (I could probably do with weathering the platform a little!).

This has been a slow build really but the first of the extension boards for the above station when in Cambrian 'Cwm Bach' guise (incidentally I did the name as the translation of 'small valley' given it's a small halt next to a planned river crossing). So below the nearly finished 60cm extension board featuring my interpretation of a Cambrian style trestle bridge. Fortunately there was 10 minutes of lovely afternoon light about half an hour ago which mean I could get a few quick snaps in the garden. Neatening up of the front extra is still needed and a black fascia painted along them. The next extension board will see a 1 in 40 gradient climb and crossing, this is currently being built and in its early stages. That will also be a standalone board as a sort of colliery branch, inspired by the country lane on my regular walking route through the fields which had a colliery line immediately adjacent to it in the 1900s. But enough of that, below is what I am currently finishing (the stock does need weathering).
