Kit bashing

Recommended Posts

I don't think there is a thread for kit bashed buildings as opposed to scratch built. I have kit bashed a wills crossing keepers cottage https://peco-uk.com/products/crossing-keepers-cottage

into a village building using some wills clapboard ssmp213 sheets. Top floor sash windows are from York Model Making. Corners have plastruct to give a neat finish. This is my first attempt at kit bashing nothing terribly grand but I am pleased with how it turned out

Superb bit of modelling and well worth starting a thread on kit bashing buildings. My in laws live in kent and there are several buildings either partially of fully clad in clapboarding also many in my village and its surroundings. I am quite envious until I think of all the upkeep they need

I am building a station building based on the Ratio kit, well 3 of them and have about 2 separate canopy kits to knock about

Sides and ends were cut up then spliced together to form elevations of the correct lengths and roughly the right window/door configeration

platform vies also showing how the roof sections were cobbled together

Rear view which will never be seen

Thank you. Your station is very impressive. I love the view you will never see looks spot on. It would be good to see people sharing their efforts in kit bashing more inspiration for us all

I have just found this thread, and must say it is good to see one to go alongside the excellent scratch built buildings thread - https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/74067-show-us-your-scratchbuilt-building/

Here are some buildings I have made from HO kits, anglicising them and extending them to fit OO gauge. I haven’t worried too much about the scale of the floors and even the bricks, my gut feeling is that they work OK.

Department store, made from two Walthers Argosy bookstore kits, plus a lot of other bits.

Newsagent made from part of a Kibri Corner shop kit. Anglicised, extended to make it more OO than HO by adding in a bar across the shop window top. I wasn’t that happy with the back to be honest, it feels a bit of a mishmash.

Arcade, this one is still in progress. From the same Kibri kit, with sections cast in resin to allow it to be extended. Loosely based on shops on Kirkgate in Leeds.

Details of all these builds are on my Ellerby thread - https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/53110-ellerby-4mm-buildings-rolling-stock-scratch-kit-building/

There is also a thread for Large building kits, city centre style, which has a some excellent kit bashing in it too.

Hopefully I’ll be able to post some more updates to come before too long.

Those are brilliant mate, which I had the patience !

that Bakewell tart looks good enough to eat !

Thanks Rob, as someone pointed out on my Ellerby thread, those Bakewells are about the size of a football. I am quite tempted, to repaint with more cherries to make them a better scale.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried to market Bakewells that are 12 inches across, perhaps a new market to explore.

Always been a great fan of kit bashing in the hope of saving time...... not sure it ever does though...

Now working in 7mm scale...this is the worst kit I`ve ever bought.....

A  resin GWR water tower kit  ....

...and a massive bit of kit bashing as I only ever used the resin cast landing bracket !!!

Do you think the Wills craftsman's kit's Class as Kit bashing . The work you need to do it feels like it.  Well i've built the CK13 kit . The Black horse inn. But it's now the plough .

I think the modern term is a "scratch building aid" or "a kit of parts" but not a kit in the true sense most think of, where you simply glue parts together after cleaning up the sprue tabs

In some ways they are rather like some of the ealy post-war 'Anorma' and similar kits. Material parts marked out for cutting (via. templates for the Wills) and some printed detail papers (moulded texture for the Wills) plus instructions. Half-way to scratchbuilding, but with a clear idea of how to get there.

My love affair with resin building kits is in the hope they will not be affected by dampness in the garden shed or in the garden perhaps.

So I chose this all resin GWR engine shed kit to do a kit bash job on...

I thought the doors needed GWR`ising  so remade them with plasticard..

DSC04924.JPG.9ba7089905f8e3b5038136e35f17c942.JPG

Tidied up the stone work and added internal wall detailing....

DSC04925.JPG.9d333a4dc562aa76c39762a842d6eb8f.JPG

...and then put it all together....

DSC04930.JPG.401ee96874d6f2c716b8a0b5e61c2b26.JPG

Did more stonework tidying using good old Miliput and saliva ( pre Covid)

and then added some slapstick...........

Good mixture of materials, resin, styrene and brass wire.

I have done plenty of riveting on brass before. Was wondering what method you used on the styrene and if that would also be suitable for 4mm.

Hi Dave

This is my riveter,

008.jpg.e33e56aa6082b333cc11cf292be6db9c.jpg

....................................   and as long as you have a device with an anvil that helps shape the rivet and also one that adjusts the pressure of the punch it would just be a case of experimenting with a range of plasticard thicknesses to find one that doesn`t allow the punch to pierce right through. You may also need to use some  modellers licence and space the rivets further apart to prevent the anvil causing distortion/damage along the run of rivets.

Cheers

John

Thanks for replying so quickly with the information.

Just so happens I bought one of those from Metalsmith some years ago. Unused as most rivet formation on brass has been done with the London Road Models gravity punch into half etched holes. I expect the Metalsmith riveter with the anvil will be much better on plasticard so thanks for the reminder of what is in the cupboard!

I am planning to build a version of the Findhorn viaduct via a number of kits from CVMW and lots of extra bits of styrene and perhaps etches. Might start a new thread on that one under structures?

Cheers

Dave

This was originally intended to be a quick and easy scenic backdrop for a lorry kit I was building.

Several months later, the shell has been rebuilt three times (first time because the original version still looked more like an Airfix church than an up upland longhouse, second time because I caught it on one corner as I picked it up and ripped it apart) and it's on it's fifth roof.  The lorry kit never did get finished.

These are all looking great. I have a thread about the Wills kits https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/19130-wills-building-kits/

I have been addicted too them for about 12 months... maybe it has something to do with COVID... and a lock down. Any how I am finishing up a Water Mill at the moment so I will drop some new photos over there shortly.
