You're on. Top work John; watching with interest. For the 'track grass' on my Parkend, I used the uncoloured 'straw' static grass and dry brushed it with Humbrol 150 to give it a natural tone; it was a bit long in 2mm so I used my beard trimmer to reduce it back. If you want a sure-fire way for your loved ones to think you're losing it; stating you're off to shave your layout is a good starting place. Not that I recall. There are a few in Ben Ashworth’s assorted works. Re the grass it’s looking very good, I’ve used the ‘new’ Peco grass and mixed it with Woodland Scenics, sticking primarily to autumn colours. I’ve also stuck with ye Olde dyed lint, with limited over sprays of static grass. 13

They don’t like dogs if you are out walking; quite often the verges along the roadside get trashed by the boar, as well people’s gardens!

I was taking a 'scenic diversion' to the Asda RDC at Chepstow, if anyone asks....

RMweb Gold Popular Post Captain Kernow Posted September 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 5, 2020 (edited) Some of my photos from my visit to Marsh Sidings yesterday: The area covered in coal and coal dust is where the Forest of Dean Free Miners would load their coal from road vehicles into 16t mineral wagons. A scene that could almost reflect the early days of the Dean Forest Railway preservation activities: We were testing various types of stock - compensated, sprung and rigid (the Presflos are the latter): John's rather lovely Wills 61XX adds further to the 'early DFR' atmosphere: Edited September 5, 2020 by Captain Kernow
RMweb Gold Popular Post Re6/6 Posted September 18, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 18, 2020 The Good Captain paid another visit to MS and more locos and stock were run, A visitor from 'Callow Lane'..... a Gloucester engine I think. A silky smooth runner in 'slug mode' This 16xx will be a permanent engine for the layout. The body was from a Sutherland Models kit with a soldered assembly by Malcolm Mitchell no less! It was so excellently done that the solder was virtually invisible! The chassis was scratchbuilt on Gibson frames. CK has been working on it as it has been stored for many years without running and it was gummed up with hardened grease. When it reaches the Chief Operating Manager's high standards it will be passed to run!. An arty-farty shot. The trees were generously given to us by the Eridge Group for use on Balcombe. They are not correct for here as those trees will be tall Beeches . These have just been stuck in to give a feel to that area of the layout. They will be 're-foliated' for further use. A visiting 54xx More to follow........ 19 1 2

RMweb Gold Popular Post Re6/6 Posted September 23, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Popular Post Share Posted September 23, 2020 In another timeline......! All ex- Matford stock. The Seacows are still in '00' so are just sitting on the track! The 37 is from ViTrains nicely weathered by CK. It still runs very well in 'slug mode'.
RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted September 23, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 23, 2020 Here are some of mine: 5420 was allocated to Lydney shed between 1960 and 1962, but not really for Forest goods services. It was one of the locos allocated to the Lydney to Sharpness school services, that ran via Gloucester, following the damage to the Severn Bridge in 1960.

Not altogether unfeasible - it was a Class 37 that worked the last BR revenue freight out of Marsh Sidings, in 1976. 3 1
RMweb Gold Re6/6 Posted September 28, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 28, 2020 Some visitors to the sidings. The running of the troublesome 16xx is finally satisfactory thanks to the persistence of CK with hours of running on the rolling road. Photos can be useful to show imperfections in the retaining wall! A yet to be completed RT Models Thomas Hill 'Vanguard' 17
David Bell
This is lovely. I am particularly fond of the 16XX not least because I live not 500 yds from the trackbed of the Dornoch branch. Surely the most unlikely posting for a 16XX? 2 1

RMweb Gold Captain Kernow Posted September 28, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 28, 2020 Here are some of my own photos. 1608 with some mineral wagons, typical Forest of Dean in the early 1960s. The loco features an old Cotswold (Sutherland) whitemetal kit body built by Malcolm Mitchell (no less!) and purchased by John a few years ago, on a commissioned chassis, consisting of Alan Gibson milled side frames (modified 64XX ones, which have the same wheel base), Gibson wheels, Mashima motor and High Level gearbox. When the loco was initially completed, it ran really well but was then put away for a few years, some of which were in my care, while it waited for me to get round to fitting screw link couplings! I thought I'd try it out on my test track one day and found that it now ran like a dog. The bearings and gearbox were gummed up with dried paint and congealed oil, but once I cleared all that away and reassembled the chassis, it still didn't run like it used to. Much tinkering and running-in on the rolling road ensued (much of which took place at the same time that I was building my own OO version of the same kit). For a very long time and despite hours and hours of running in, it didn't seem to improve much, until this morning, when something seemed better. I took it round to John's and tried it out on the layout, using my slow speed AMR hand held controller and all was now well! Big sighs of relief all round. A few years later in the time line and a class 33 had come over to Lydney on a special working from Bristol and ended up being used on a local goods working to Parkend:
