Rural Branch lines

Recommended Posts

just a quick question as i'm not fully clued up lol, are the branch lines always single track? from some pictures i have seen most seem to be single, but this is not always the case? and the station i'm building is a small country station, can i get away with single line and a run round loop?

By far the majority of branch lines were single track. So your choice of single track with a loop is the norm.

But some branches e.g. Windermere were double track and others e.g. Swanage were built with bridges that could accommodate future doubling.

Another twist to this question is that a lot of present day rural branch (and main) lines were built double tracked and during the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, a lot of the remaining branch lines such as Whitby, Weston-super-Mare loop and others were singled as a economy measure.

thanks guys, so there is no real right or wrong and i should go with what i feel is right, the one i'm building will be the terminus station , i have found a great website for 1960s rural railway pictures called fairford, it was a 22 mile branch line, that has sadly gone but plenty of inspiration. thank you for the warm welcome too :)

Not completely gone! In the top photo you posted, which is Witney Goods (the original Station before the “new” station was built on the extension to Fairford) the Goods Shed still stands (at least the stone part anyway) as well as the Station Master‘s house which can be seen at the back right of the photo.

Screenshots from ‘Google Earth Street View’:

The current occupiers have a ‘totem’ style nameplate “Station House” next to the gate:
