esmor
Has anybody else had problems with these. Just had the third one emit lots of smoke. No obvious reason, all wiring correct and no short circuit indication from the DCO(MERG) or Command station and boster(MERG). Edited July 5, 2020 by esmor extra info. RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted July 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 5, 2020 No. I have about 30 on two layouts, and my Digitrax system seems not to cause any problems.
johnb
Obvious one, is the motor pulling too much current for the chip to handle?

esmor
I've worked out what was happening. If you dont do the recomended alterations to peco electofrog points ( I couldnt work out why this was necessary-i know now) and then subsequently weather and ballast the track the balast/weathering causes a resistance between the switch and the stock rails, this is sufficiant for the dcc80 not to switch and pass a lot of current through the on board resistor- enough in the attempt to drive a loco over it in the wrong direction to cause a lot of smoke but at the same time not enough current is passed to trip the boster overcurrent or district cut outs.
