Class 50 resprays

Recommended Posts

I've just joined RM web and started a blog on the Virgin 87s but due to work on the house these have had to be put on hold. Thought I would share a rework of three NSE 50s back to large logo:This was the starting point:

IMG_5237.JPG.4bdee1ae024d7a74a4807cc9b6187aff.JPG

The bodyshells had all the printed details removed and then the NSE stripes so a smooth coat of primer could be applied. As usual the doors on a 50 were playing hard to get so hence they had to come off....

Light primer coat applied and rubbed down to highlight any further "lumpy bits"

IMG_5253.JPG.aa17ec7b8a81a88cfade8dfcd563d1dd.JPG

Then a second primer coat to the bodysides

Next up on the 50s was to lay down the yellow ends, not forgetting the doors....

BR Blue was then the order of the day, starting with the grilles and then the bodysides

With the blue dried off after a few days this was masked and the grey roof applied over the black to leave some pre-shading

The rough finish with all the masking off is something like this

Next up was the black window surrounds and the dreaded cant rails - tidy as possible but these are going to get a battering (sorry for the quality of the pic screen shot off the PC as Icloud deleted my pics:wacko: The paint around the windows is a bit ropey and got tidied up a bit, there's only so much that's acceptable!

Numbers and arrows etc up next:

So in its raw state looking something like this, engine room window cocked up by over zealous maskol!! :

All very bland but

Picking up from last bit here's all three numbered and ready for weathering:

With all decals complete the fun can begin. A weathered roof should not in my opinion be a few puffs of exhaust it needs a bit more, starting with a few selected washes to bring out the detail:

Here it is beginning to build up the definition on the panel lines and creep into the recesses - excess can be blended in with a brush or removed when dry building up to something like this:

or this....

IMG_0804.jpg.31ae9f122885f30ea2a1c89d147dcb95.jpg

Then these....

With all that out the way they are now ready for some airbrush

Picking up from the washes on the roof bodyside detail was treated similarly: like this

and this...

IMG_0807.jpg.b760eab7ea19b9d6cc023d8333b9ac50.jpg

Right, back to the roof. A build of of exhaust is now added and general grime,

Building up as you go along...

This mix is also used down onto the bodyside and bogies then adding track dirt, frame dirt and brake dust ending up something like this:

Last part! I follow up the airbrush work with detail painting, scrapes, scratches, oil stains and tidying up dodgy bits of painting - what looks fine to the naked eye can often look a bit crap in an enlarged photo so its about getting is as good as I can. Here are some pics of the 99% finished locos.

1st up roof details on 015 - excuse quality as snapped off the PC!

Here are the underframes of 004

and 004 again

Heres 021..

and again..

and valiant with its wonky steps ( before they were sorted!)

I hope this gives some idea of what goes into a respray and weathering and when I get the house project soon I will be back on the 87s

Cheers Jerry

9 hours ago, Squirrel Rail said:

Thanks, I was pretty pleased with them!

I did the cant rail with a bow pen and a steel ruler along the sides and then free hand round the cabs. On a long stretch it’s easier to get a straight line than with decals!

As a follow up to these here's a couple more 50's that I have done:

50001 was a renumber, fade and weather, love good old BR blue!

50031 was a weathering job

IMG_6729.JPG.df5f455d200dc51c69c8d1fdf23b99ca.JPG

50046 was a complete respray from an NSE machine, pretty much same as the previous post apart from the different roof and quite a lot of fading!

Last up 042, another respray and quite battered, don't know why but only had the one pic!!

Won't be adding to this post as will be back on my Squirrel Rail workbench thread but hope you like them, Cheers Jerry
