Irish wagon builds

Kirley, yes pipes a signature of the wagon, got peaked cap brake distributor fitted and a cast cylinder under it. I have hung back from all the small air pipes as routing not clear on phots or drawing I have seen. But will add release wire and make up the manifold on the decked end. 

Work done recently was to number some flats for the fuel barriers and number two NIR ballasts.  Found some wagons to decal so work continues and pics tomorrow if light good enough.  Some ex ebay beet wagons to work on to ensure IRM announcement is the 20 foot triangulated chassis project - the tanker and container body already made  on the P42 programme.  20 footer gives beets , containers ,flats, decked versions , bagged cement, molasses tank etc. all signature and perhaps not too tooling cost rich.

Having built a number of 42 foot flats time to find loads. 40 foot Bell containers painted, transfers to come from SSM.

Precision First group magenta and Electric blue a close match for a sun/salt bleached version !

Second pic shows what I was trying to copy - 20 foot version, close but no cigar, hopefully with weathering it will meld together on a train of IRM versions or sit on hard standing perhaps, but good practice with spraying kit.

While waiting for transfers and looking around on IRM forum I found a member had 3D printed bodies for the sadly underused 40 foot container style box bodies planned to replace the 4 wheel fleet and had also printed a 27504 - a rebodied 4 wheeler - a one off. now painted , sea grey gloss on 27504 the short body and railmatch bauxite on the 40 footers.  Robert supplied a selection of transfers so once fully dry a coat of clear on areas for transfers.  Bogie waggons are SSM etched brass ones - the 3d print container neatly fits in and just touch the angled container  alignment plates- perfect!

Well, got stuck in cement... latest faffing with MIR resin pallet cement wagons with the natty door gear!

Body cutdown to match height as a first off, pulley door gear and balance wheel added. for three wagons.

1008649440_Irishwagons271120008.jpg.32fa7db00dbb73159679e581aa6019a5.jpgEnd with gubbins for limiting pallet movement - a moveable panel in end of wagon that had adjustable location - twiddling the wheel caused a cam action to push plate against pallet side.  Here part built as upper camdrive  to fit.  

The castings are of their day and possible that moulds a little worn  as a result even my low standards could not use the end pulleys as in a visible location . Had a ponder  ( pause for effect of pondering, drink of tea arrived.)  Nigel Lawton does some natty pulleys for his drive belt system and so I bought the smallest and thinest- 4mm dia 1.6m wide. After sleeveing the bore these fixed to the drive rod, looks much better than the pulley cast on the upstand. But given its all dummy and chain will be glued its all down to imagnieering after all. I feel better for it.

Kaydee 19s on plasticard mounts and a lovely drawhook and plate from Lanarkshire models. Doing these 3 took most of yesterday.

Can I ask what you are going to use for the door opening chains. The chain supplied with the MIR kit is way way overscale and looks horrendous. My wagon build has been on hold for months while I tried to get some finer chain, but all I could get was some N gauge chain, which, although better is still very much overscale. The chain fitted to the real wagons is very small, as can be seen in your picture over on IRM.

I even tried using plain wire, which looks OK, based on the 2 ft rule, and will probably look even better once painted to look rusty instead of the natural silver colour of the wire. The jury is still out on that one.

David, I have to fit but I got some US model train N chain which is a bit finner.  In 2mm scale the finescale guys have a real cheat with using twisted wire - some dcc link up flex stripped and the halved with a lop round a nail in a vice and the other ends into a pin chuck and with a tensioned pull twiddled up with the pin chuck - a very fine looking chain and being non looped does mean it postions and stays put - ever tried pushing a bit of chain! 

 

Also yet to they this but words do make it sound simple  and worth a try.  If running a rake of wagons then at a push this uber fine scale  method needs only using on  outer ends of first and last, a painted wire could survive the two foot rule.

I had two "generic" ISO tank containers from MIR and they were built as a fill in and recently spotted the tanks on the Foynes - Sligo coal and oil train that ran via the Burma road looked very similar - on a UTube vid.  So out came the black matt and hey presto to tanks now looking for wagons and of course now I will need to look ahow to do 6 or so coal boxes!   Lovely new MM 121 class as back drop.- fantastic loco and already sold out at many locations where it had been on preorder.

Kirley,

They come/ came with the Barrier wagon kit - I subbed SSM versions.  Ian had some on ebay not three long ago so perhaps worth an email .   The resin barrel is just that the ends are an etched brass flat that is oversize - I guess annealed and a former a dome could be formed from it. I just glued it on filed to shape and lobbed filler and filing time until happy.  The Dapol tank end might be an option but would need reducing in diameter so perhaps a false friend  and once it is tucked in the ISO frame it passes the 2 foot rule - esp if looking the other way !

Bell transfers on 4  CR rail 40foot boxes and 3D print chassis just waiting on delivery from SSM.

Halford`s red primer, railfreight red for brake wheels little bit of black, silver and wagon buaxite  and Railtec transfers  . The vac pipes from Lanarkshire models and are lovely flash free castings.  The brake wheels and cross shaft on on this economy print of the flat but I had 3D print brake wheels and with a cross shaft fitted easy enough to add - they have a little reinforcing collar behind as they are easily knocked off... guess how I know.

Well I guess the  sub headline is "spoilt for choice"  UTA motorway contracts saw a fleet of a unique hopper design to Ireland with offset  shute . History has them steam hauled when main line UK had given up  and even the Hunslet diesels got in the act on a later contract. Provincial Wagons do a natty resin kit , rude not to so here is pics of progress today.

This pic shows the sharp casting of the complex face side of the wagon. The vertical door was chain connected to the top operating rod that was powered by another length of chain to a hydraulic ram - mandraulic   really as a bloke had to pump a removeable handle . - bits on left of door on face.  Worker access was by leaping up onto a foot stepbar and then hanging on with a hand while stroking pump with other.  HSE kittens are available!! And this was done on the edge of a tip site some time with machinery lumbering about  below..

Unsurprisingly phots of this side and operation of doors very rare.

Looking good - I remember seeing a few of these wagons rusting away in the sidings at Magheramorne in the late 1970s and have a few of these kits in my yet-to-be-built box.

 

There are some good colour photos of these wagons, including the working side, in the book “The Ulster Transport Authority in Colour”.

 

Looking forward to seeing you complete these eclectic wagons.

Hi  Nile I was tending toward the 101 and 10 wagon second contract. Of course IRM will produce a Jeep at some point and two would be ideal ! 

 

Today seen a bit more wagonery . The 4 wheel beet  and a 20foot container for an oil tank and amazingly for me a wagon finished. The first bogie beet got couplings this afternoon.

In back ground another 45foot flat , this along with 20 foot and beet chassis a lucky buy from Ian at MIR the other week in a job lot of bits. Bogies from Bachmann and wheel sets from Peters Spares - really nice true wheels.

Due the delights of Track and trace a good bunch now off work so two restday works means end of production for a while - silver cloud and all that.

A quick hour saw some progress

MIR 45 foot flat - resin with SSM bogies and kadees glued onto bogie, yellow  centre line and black dots on pockets. Tail lamps added to barriers as well.

C rail tanker on flat -ex the spoils packs that were crimbo bargain offer . Tail lamps from Glenderg models , slip over IRM lamp brackets, no glue required and very good they are.  A productive hour to finish off a good bench clean.

First pic has tucked in corner a yellow Sherpa - painted when doing the 45 foot line - van for the Scottish roundy project. just need a micro arrows and BR legend  along with some BR chaps.
