I find it rather surprising that there were so few 25s at Toton.  Certainly the number of 20s seems to fit with the normal Sunday line-up. It seemed to be rare for the 44s not to be all stabled at Toton over the weekend, but your notes are missing D4 and D6.

It does show why the prospect of visits to East Midlands sheds in those days was a source of great anticipation for us spotters from elsewhere.

I'm sorry, but that's a bit cryptic for me.

What we need is a decoder to show which numbers belong to which diesel loco classes. Or an old Ian Allan spotters' book.

5901 and 8521 were presumably already withdrawn and in use with the Research Dept?

Thanks to you all for your replies. Apologies if the notes were cryptic,I assumed that any readers would be familiar with the loco classes. On reflection the few 25's at Toton is surprising. Maybe the two other 44's were indeed involved in the engineering work, thankfully another visit to Toton the following year found them on shed. 5901 and 8521 were as you say in use by the Research Dept.,and an APT was also seen at Derby.

Something I missed while posting this, must have got home via Paddington that day, seen there were:

152  D1033 D1073  1613 1729  4177  D7022 D7032.

Yep,going further afield from your home patch to go spotting was always something to savour, saving up pocket money being a limiting factor...

Cheers,

Neil

Hi John,

Fully understand your point. Just by the way,the TOPS renumbering of the whole BR fleet was one of the reasons I gave up my rail interest at the end of 1973,another reason being the demise of the Warships...!

Regards,

Neil

Maybe 4 and 6 were out working the ballast trains for the Loughborough/Derby blockage ?!!

It's possible however members of D1-D10 absent from Toton at weekends were usually to be found in Derby works.

Edit.  Failed to notice the OP had been to Derby works.  D'Oh.

Yes, but the visit included Derby works and only D9 was seen there. Unless the other two were locked away in the paint shop.

The irony of course being that all the 'real' enthusiasts complained that everything was all boring blue boxes and that the railway was dead to them since steam had gone
