rob D2
Looking great. Class 60 is a favourite of mine, and the Hornby model is a very good representation , even 15 odd years after it was introduced

Squirrel Rail
Managed to make a start on the airbrush work on the tugs today. Mixes of frame dirt, brake dust and sleeper grime to bodysides and running gear. All looking very flat and boring but its the starting point for the next lot. First up here's Charles Babbage, really pleased with the rusty yellow roof/cab side. And the other sides coming along nicely too.
Squirrel Rail
60068 - here's the other half of the pair of charlies - Mr Darwin. Quite different colour in this one- workbench light makes things look a bit weird but it's quite a bit browner. It also had some clean patches so these look a bit stark at present and will get toned down as I go along and from the other side:
rob D2
Nice work. So much more professional than some of the “ pro weathering “ you see on certain eBay sites. I quite liked the EWS big beasties, but unfortuntely that period was also when they were storing them left right and centre as they lost work to other operators .
Squirrel Rail
Thanks Rob, I won’t even start on some of the “pro” stuff that’s out there but was one of the reasons I fired up Squirrel Rail! 100% agree on the big beastie logos - think they look good - big or small on the 60s or a 92 or 90. As you say shame so many got stored as they’re impressive beasts and look good in just about any livery! Cheers Jerry
rob D2
Did you ever do any loadhaul ones ? I brought a nicely weathered one off eBay

I brought a nicely weathered one off eBay I did a couple of Swindon Dalesman with the loadhaul logo all worn off and if memory serves me right 007 as well a few years ago now though. When I get round to my website I’ll have to add a gallery of some of the older stuff!
rob D2
I’ve got an 007, I’ll get a picture of it when it’s not in for maintenance ..... Question....how easy and which technique for removing Hornby numbers do you recommend ? I’ve used Tcut and occasionally humbrol thinners on Bachmann, but my one attempt on a sector logo on A. Hornby 60 Went straight through the grey as well . Id like to do a 059 as that was the first loco I saw on arriving at the legendary 1998 open day at Toton
Squirrel Rail
Hi Rob, normally with Hornby a cocktail stick and a steady hand just picking at the number will work, sometimes cutting the stick at 45 degrees helps. If you’re really brave a new scalpel blade works too. Thinners and T -cut will work but you’ll need to Matt / satin varnish after to restore the finish. As with all manufacturers it often varies from model to model and it also depends on what the finished model wants to look like so I tend to play it by ear starting with the cocktail stick and see what happens! I’ve got a “scraper” made from an old pair of tweezers which is pretty lethal but I’m so used to it it shifts most things without damage. Hope that helps, cheers Jerry
BelsteadLane
Squirrel Rail 90048 is now in the Wratting Road Fleet. Looks spectacular running under the wires. Currently running in before a change of address and I’ll change the pantograph cv’s as well. top work Jerry. And you’ll be happy to know the cab light does in fact work. Might have just been the track I brought round to test it on.

Squirrel Rail
Back on the Tugs tonight and the 57 and 73 that were started last week. First up 66068 adding the roof dirt and starting to shade in the fuel tanks and parts of the bodyside & bogies: and general view of the roof: and the exhaust Likewise with 054 but being honest looking at the pictures it doesn't look much different to yesterday as this one is a lot cleaner than 068 Last pair totally different - weathering is not just about coating everything with cr@p. These two are just a very subtle addition to the factory finish - just to take the edge off so to speak. 57312 with very light exhaust, dulling down the roof grills and a little bit to cab fronts and roof panels and likewise with just a hint to the bogies and roof panels on the 73 which will be toned back a little on the roof grill. Also need to look at the roof details as working from a pic there are a couple of changes so waiting for instructions on what to do!

Completely agree with you Rob, Jerry’s work is in a different league to the so called pro weathering you get elsewhere. Continuing the Hornby class 60 theme, I currently have three which have undergone the Squirrel Rail treatment and will be appearing on my new layout in due course. DB’s 60040 and 60044, and Colas 60087 Cheers Matt 4 1

Squirrel Rail
First try at 73 roof Ariel frame- using compass cutter and bare metal foil - not far out so will make two more tomorrow when the eyes and brain are working properly!!
Squirrel Rail
Bit more work on the 73 - Made a representation of the ariels and the two "round" additions on the access panel and a coat of grey to blend it in. The ariels are from the model but too long so have had a trim... Pics from the net show the ariels surrounded by large black(?) patches which are random in shape. I've masked these up with a hard edge against the roof panels and then used masking fluid to get the random edge pattern. I didn't free hand airbrush these as I wanted a raised edge to represent the patch as on the pictures. So far pretty pleased with it with the masking now off.
