Hi Jerry,

I really like how well you've captured the dirt on 047 coming from the bottom of the 3 vents (I am guessing those 3 black squares half way along are vents of some kind:)). Very typical of the real thing. Looking forward to seeing them progress.

All the best,

Dave

Thanks Dave, I copied a picture the owner sent me, not sure what makes the stain and how it’s only blown in one direction but fun to mess about copying! Cheers Jerry

and lastly a respray of 60078 in Mainline blue into GBRF with Graham Farish names and logos, again from Railtec,

That's one that's very likely to remain as a renumber only in OO!

Yes,

It's pretty good isnt it ?, a shame that soon that livery is going to be no more, with 90048 suspected to be getting a new coat of paint, surely, they should be getting the white non-Freightliner branded ones sorted first, so we can marvel at 90048 for a bit longer yet :-)

I have just had a nice Freightliner 90 pair just come through Stafford tonight at 00.10, I couldn't see their liveries but they do make a great silhouette against the houses the other side of the line :-)

Kat :-)

Thanks to Squirrel Rail, Ive finished a long wanted “what-if”...

Foster Yeoman was growing in the 1970’s, had plans in the Mid-East too. Withdrawing westerns and hearing of 56’s being built in Eastern Europe no doubt caused concern and with limited type 5 power, it was rumoured Foster Yeoman were interested in buying Westerns to power their trains.

To fuel those rumours, several Westerns were separated from the Scrap lines and sheeted over for protection.

(not my image/flickr)

15/04/1978 - Swindon Works, Wiltshire.

BR paused scrapping Westerns from August 1977, no further were cut until November 1978.. D1011/12/15/21/22/25/28/33/56/58/70/71, and in summer 1977 D1010 was purchased by Foster Yeoman and it was moved to Merehead, which no doubt added to the rumours.

Interesting the DTG website indicates they tried to buy D1022 but “it came to nothing” and later D1015 in  1978 but were told it “wasn't for sale”..Which would be odd, for a scrap loco...  (they finally got it in 1979 as the last one left).

So anecdotally suggests something, whatever it was may have been happening.

If this had been true and come to fruition, FY could have had access to 13 Westerns.. 10+ 3 spares perhaps ?

All my life as an enthusiast I recall this story, I was told the idea was eventually killed by unions who wouldn't accept drivers of locomotives that were not BR owned / maintained.

Was this why D1010 initially went to Merehead ?, then designated preserved ?
Was this why those Westerns were set aside ?

Its worth noting, all but 1022/58 were withdrawn, prior to 1977... they were set aside whilst others still ran...

Who knows.

my back story to this, is the 52’s, if they had been successful would probably only lasted until the 59’s anyway... whilst a livery would most likely have been the Merehead blue used on the US Switcher.. but that would not have been anywhere near as much fun...

I spent many summers near Westbury with grandparents, and my what-if had many years to think over heres the rudimentary artwork I gave to Squirrel Rail

Squirrel did the body, I did the chassis..

52009 is an anagram of 59002.. the name Yeoman Enterprise.. the first 59 I saw.

Source model was a “seconds” body from DCC supplies at Warley in 2017, and a seconds chassis acquired as a non-runner in 2020. After dismantling right down to the motor, the fault was traced to a wax seal on the armature bush at assembly, once that was cleaned, the motor reassembled and the rest followed.

Whats left ? A light channel to make the headlight work, and as Mainline steam ( and support coaches) used to carry a yellow oval registration plate, I guess I should do one, but I don't know who makes these.

So whats next, @rob D2 should I do an Azuma style GWR one next for sleeper services ? :jester:

Thanks to Squirrel Rail ! This is one Ive wanted for decades.

Bit of progress on the London Midland 150 today with the lime green under the black added. Needs flattening now and some tidy ups so bear in mind this is work in progress!25A53807-BD99-4772-8B03-40584A6C3668.jpeg.11f320c6ea89281406213dcebfcd80ad.jpeg

likewise Hood in intercity has had its yellow ends added, need to tidy up behind where the handrails will go but it’s getting there...

Sorry for lack of updates but domestic duties have left little time to sit down and take pics! First up First Group 90 that’s headed off to it’s new home...

50031 is now reassembled so a few tidy ups then decals and nameplates. The base model was the Hornby weathered Achilles so everything needs cleaning, windows, handrails and all the under frame needs repainting so not a quick job!

weathering next and N Gauge cargo wagons and EWS & DB steel carriers, all work in progress but you get the idea...,

Some very impressive work on 90047 Jerry, really brought back a few memories of this machine sleeping between night shifts at Edinburgh Waverley, on the Caledonian Sleeper before the MK5's came in

Keep up the fantastic work

Jules

You keep doing these 90's and it's getting harder and harder to resist sending some for resprays now Jerry!

Keep up the brilliant work and new liveries I'm sure everyone is enjoying them!

Looking forward to seeing them.

Weathering and varnish this afternoon with 66522 and 90222 nearly at the finishing line. 522 is a challenge as it’s a really grotty machine but can look overdone - hope I’ve hit a happy medium..

256DE78B-BBAD-43A7-8987-545ADB44405C.jpeg.a84ae015a2d34a1257988eda0c94e12f.jpeg

and from the other side

As a respray from a Hattons freightliner 66 I’m pretty pleased with this and don’t think I have seen a Hattons Shanks 66 before!

90222 is the first RFD European 99 I’ve done so another off the list...

one job I wish I hadn’t had to do is the repairs to the RSH tank which postman Pat decided to stamp on, luckily he missed the other two!

The 3D print is really brittle, the cab fractured above the left buffer in a big arc and also across the left hand window. Here it is with all the parts back in place

and repainted, still need to tidy up the top of the buffer beam.

Last up a before and after. I’ve a pair of TFW 153s to refinish and they are horrible things to spray as getting a good mask over the rivets is a challenge. Here’s my first attempt- need to tweak the red a little and will most likely refinish the bottom line of the black- there’s no readily available TFW grey and grey is a pain to match so opinions welcome on the shade or suggestions on what is available off the shelf as a match!

Top one looks closer, but think TFW grey isnt too far from GA Grey..

note how reflective the grey is.. the “sun” if you could call it that was on the rear, making the sides appear darker.

its definitely lighter than Railfreight Grey, more like an off white undercoat.

I always thought it as off white, but TFW is very pale.

The 67s 005 & 023 are both being renamed and numbered, decals have started to go on the Ferris pair and Hood has been on hold as I repainted a door which I didn’t like, with four colours it’s not a quick job!
