Great to see someone else who's gone to the effort of modelling the DDA-compliant 153 with the new toilet location. Not many have done it, so well done! Great quality.

Honestly, I said to my friend who models more Connex style units in the South East (So he wouldn't be looking at 153's anyway) that Hornby had released a new 153 in TFW livery  and genuinely he could not spot the difference that it was a repaint! Mine look fantastic as they were in the previous ones that Squirrel did. Very happy as TFW will be my new employer when I move from Southern, will admit I am excited to see how the 158's come out, they aren't mine but it's a great idea! Am hoping to save up some train tokens for a 150 for a TFW repaint!

Ive had these Revolution IZAs some time. They’re a really good model and beautifully detailed m. Even better is not one bit had fallen off in transit unlike some other wagons I’ve had recently. Here’s a pic of one just out the box

and here the bottom one has had a wash to bring out the detail as the  of start the weathering process - not a quick job with 24 wagons to do:D

Next up from the queue is a 90 for remedial work on a wobbly cant rail - and no - it wasn’t me!

It als needed a bogie replacement as did another chassis so out with the toolkit

and the Hornby 90 in Freightliner again still being worked on but you get the gist of it!

First update in a few days as been otherwise engaged. I’m trying to get similar paint jobs all together so EWS and Freightliner are mainly the target at the moment. A lot of my work at the mo is refinishing  existing paint jobs so here’s 90047 1/2 cleaned

0954AA9C-23B4-4EF7-9D5E-1040E4EF4E5B.jpeg.5fcc45ddc83cab463a7574fcb7645555.jpeg

and then with the side clean awaiting new branding and a few other tweaks to be done such as the green cab door, new buffers and TDM cables

Another 3 tone grey project is 055 going grey from Mainline with the rail grey added

Then back to primer with a 66 being primed ready for be gold bands

and another 90 primed ready to become EWS Scotrail.

Hopefully tomorrow and Friday are train days so a few more updates than of recent!

I spoke too soon about Yesterday and today been train days but have got a few things done. The 3D printed logics have have extra sanding and primer as lines which were invisible in grey were clearly there in the red..

ADDA895A-35C1-482F-8D5A-B09BE910B437.jpeg.e924f4de0e7e580cca9dcced0b3633fd.jpeg

everything flattened and new coat of ultra fine primer on

7AA6F151-61D5-4CE9-AE3C-D1269BDE20A4.jpeg.1cc13ccaa71a8cd76b4f3bda3aac9910.jpeg

The 66 has had the gold band resprayed so that’s moving along nicely

A637D807-99BB-4D19-93D5-1AD6014CB469.jpeg.6d238fd4b82ef8d2a9398f40c029c840.jpeg

I have also finished the decals on the TFW 158 which will get its satin coat tomorrow before reassembly

tricky task is masking and spraying the yellow on the glazing, can’t take the masks off yet as too much chance of damaging the paint- not worth the risk!

Lastly just starting a first coat of muck on the cargo wagons, 24 of these (12 pairs) so not a quick job!

Next job was to make the mirrors for the 66, etched brass and square section wire has created these which although not as fine as a 3D print will survive being boxed and handling on a layout

Currently working on 4 triple grey  Freightliner 90s, one is a rework of a previous job - 047 but the other 3 are new. First job was black windscreen pillars here masked up

And here’s the four painted and 44 and 48 having received new numbers

Finding the individual differences from loco to loco is fun and earlier in the thread I added the green door on 47 is well known. What I hadn’t seen is the grey door on 48 the owner sent me in a pic so that’s been duly added!

This is one of the reasons why i particularly love the Class 90. You can look at a fleet of them all carrying the same livery, and they will all have their little differences amongst them. The different coloured doors on the triple grey FL 90s are a good example. my favourites are the small family of Racing Green 90s - 90016 being ex Parcels so it has the smaller squared battery box rather than the bigger one with rivets on. 90046 appeared with a missing bodyside logo and was like it for several years. 90041 ended up losing its original cab front FL logos and lasted without them for a while and then only within the last few years gained new ones which are smaller than the originals… 3 different appearances just with some logos!

I studied the EWS 90s around the 2004-2007 period and found that they had their differences amongst them. 90031 had yellow tmd sockets rather than orange and it’s cantrail was positioned lower than others meaning it would disappear underneath the roof and above the cab windows. 90031 carried rectangular freight buffers also. Compare that to 90017 which had the  hexagonal pivoting passenger buffers, rubbing plate, different cantrail positioning and the usual orange tdm sockets.

It just goes to show the importance of research and checking photos of a particular loco in a particular time period. Can’t just ‘rule 1’ it and renumber it only because you highly risk getting it wrong! Modern image modelling can be a pain in the backside because of this with all the things that change or come and go so quickly.

then nearly  last of the decals with the white background for the red stripes and Freightliner branding still to add

then the etch on 044, the others are being modelled later in their careers so will have the painted out patches

Hi Barclay,

not the easiest of problems to solve but I would use ( some people will recoil in horror) Johnson’s Klear (Future) to seal the decals and I would use a really good quality brush to hand paint this round and over the decals only. Any other satin or gloss acrylic should do the same job just keep brush marks to a minimum. The object here is to protect the decals. Once all that is dry I’m using AK satin varnish which can be thinned with enamel or my choice cellulose ( again more people recoil in horror!) it’s sprays beautifully and leaves a lovely finish. If you can’t get hold of that the Revell tinlets are IMHO much more reliable than the humbrol which can be inconsistent. Hopefully that makes sense, cheers Jerry

Thanks for your advice - it worked ! In the end I actually used the Humbrol 'Clear' varnish because I heard it was formulated very much like the Johnson's product. Lightly brushed over the decals and I didn't come to grief! Thanks again.
