RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted July 10, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 10, 2020 A fun build - I hope At least a simple bend for the tumblehome , front ends will be exciting - I think some 4MM tube to make the rounded corners . I like the power unit - you will need to make removeable so it can go in a 450class unit later. Robert
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 10, 2020 (edited) Hi Robert, The tumblehome curve is not as extreme as the Class 80 Mk2 profile so a gentle touch with the hammer and rod will be required. Thinking of motorising the Driving Trailer so that there is room for the dummy motor in the Driving Motor Coach. I want to fit DCC sound so I will need to run speaker wires through the three coaches to the DM coach. It would be a bit strange if the sound came out of the wrong coach. I am thinking along the lines of trimming the driving ends short of the corners, laminating plasticard around the edges and sanding the curved profile to the vertical and roof edges. The coach sides and ends will be glued to the chassis for strength and stiffness with the roofs being removable. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 11, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 11, 2020 (edited) Made a start on the centre coach. Carving off the ribbing etc. from the Dapol roof was fun. The incorrect location roof vent holes were plugged with plastic rod. I replaced the Dapol plastic wheels with Hornby metal wheels. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 12, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 12, 2020 (edited) Been having a close look at the Motor Coach sides and the Triang Mk1 sides. As has been pointed out in other threads, the Mk1 side profile is incorrect and I think it would stand out visibly against the trailer coaches. I have decided to use Dapol Stanier coaches and cut and shut them to form a 64’ coach. Two more cheap examples have been sourced from the Bay of e and should arrive this week. Work continues on the Driving Trailer. Cheers Darius Edited February 26, 2023 by Darius43
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted July 12, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 12, 2020 Good progress , Stanier coaches look the part and I hope to learn about the power car works - I guess in five years time I might get to start mine! Robert

pat141
Nice work Darius. Where did you get the model engine from?
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 14, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 14, 2020 Hi Pat, I found it on eBay - the seller has quite a range of nicely detailed engines. Resin cast engines Cheers Darius

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 15, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2020 (edited) Made a start on the Motor Coach using a cut off Dapol 57’ coach Body end and a 60’ Dapol coach body. These combine to produce the 64’ Motor Coach. The etched cab end was glued to two layers of 1mm thick plasticard. Once the etched coach sides have been fixed, the cab end will be glued in place and the corners and roof edge filled and sanded to a curved profile. The Dapol 60’ coach chassis was lengthened to 64’ using plasticard strips rather than cutting a short section out of the 57’ chassis. This leaves me with a complete 57’ chassis to make something else with. Cheers Darius Edited February 26, 2023 by Darius43 3
RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted July 15, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2020 A neat solution to extending body - a 60 foot plus a bit would mean lots of joins close together the 57foot gives a robust end, driver will be pleased with the crash resistance and noise barrier bulkhead to the engine, unlike the real thing! Thanks for the tip. Robert
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 15, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 15, 2020 (edited) Right hand etched side fixed to coach body. Cheers Darius Edited February 26, 2023 by Darius43 4

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 16, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 16, 2020 (edited) Driving coach bogies fitted. Modified Bachmann B4 bogies with one pair of bogie sides grafted onto a Hornby power bogie. Next task is the underframe equipment on the Motor Coach. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted July 17, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 17, 2020 (edited) Motor coach underframe equipment added. Door hinges and handles added to motor and intermediate coaches. Primer coat applied to coach bodies. I think some of the underframe “boxes” are too deep so they will be reduced in depth tomorrow. Cheers Darius Hi Darius, The front of this particular type of unit reminds me of the styling used on the class 502 EMU's of the Northern Line out of Liverpool exchange. I would guess it was a product of Derby works. Gibbo.

The engines were English Electric, however. After the 70 Class units were withdrawn the engines were re-used in the Castle Class DEMUs.
