With the bufferbeams, it's something we've talked about a fair bit, we might consider doing some as a custom order but the wait time would be a lot longer (e.g. 2 months from now) as would need to get some other things out the way first.

Separate buffer beam moulding?

I think a different bufferbeam and running board print would be best as it would give a stronger shape and more resistant to warping than a flat surface. If/when we do a version with the slot filled in I'll update on here :)

I grabbed one of the test prints and put it under the desk lamp to show the finish.

Bear in mind this is in its raw state and no prep has been done.

With this model I advocate a light sanding on all the flat surfaces, the fiddly bits are around the louvred side doors where a sanding stick may be useful. Then a coat of primer or filler primer (recommend only one coat on the grille area so as not to clog the holes), and sand again with wet-and-dry fine to get a smooth surface for top coat.

When printing, it is done on an angle for stability and to improve quality. As the print is done in layers, you can see the diagonal lines. Unlike on a filament printer, these are very fine and almost imperceptible to the touch when you run your finger over them.

Hi Corbs

Your Hudswell Clarke is looking great!

So much that within an hour of seeing it, i'd bought a kit and a Bachmann 03 to have a good at my first 3D printed loco conversion kit.

Should look well at home on Peartree Green Dock once I've built it.

Any suggestions how to glaze it?

Keep up the good work.

Mark

To be honest, I've never really been a fan of 3D-printing and it's not so much a grainy finish, it's more that they have ridges or print lines and that's what has always put me off, but I built one of Corbs' Avonsides for him as a test build and was pleasantly surprised at how good the finish was. It's never going to be perfectly smooth, like a RTR injection-moulded body, but it didn't take much effort at all to make it presentable. As 3D prints go, these are very good.

That looks good, thanks. Having said that, and being picky, sorry, do you think the HL chassis would be suitable?

Thanks Mark, for small windows I often use glue 'n glaze. For larger ones I might suggest cutting out a piece of transparent plastic (from a piece of packaging or similar) and sticking in place with glue 'n glaze.

From looking at photos of the HL 03 chassis on another thread, it looks like the motor and gearbox do not interfere with where the gearbox on the HC would be, although it might protrude into the cab a bit.

My concern would be with motor width but I guess the motor could be changed or reorientated?

Just a suggestion.. don't print the doors on the Hudswell.. just get some etches done - better detail and it mean anyone who wants to make the  bonnet sides any smoother can have a better go at sanding them..

Indeed, some of the kits in development are part-etched as there are some things which the 3D printed resin isn't suitable for. It's just added design time and cost, another supplier, complexity etc.

I felt that with this one, it's good enough to not require it. Obviously there will always be room for improvement (and everyone's standards will be different) but as we hopefully do more kits and technology continues to improve, so shall the quality of the product.

Thanks to everyone who has bought our stuff so far. A portion of the profits from kits of Avonside B4 ISC No.2 are put aside for the ongoing restoration of the real loco based at the Avon Valley Railway. I'm pleased to say so far we have been able to donate £56!

Here you go, Corbs; a couple of Hudswell Clarkes for your perusal. ( I'll take my sales commission in whiskey, or used fivers) ;)

This one I built as a commission build/paint/weather. As the designers' intended, and on a Bachmann Class 03 chassis.

This one uses only the cab, bonnet and buffers from the kit. The running plate/buffer beams, and chassis are a custom scratchbuild, from brass. It runs on Gibson wheels.

Any plans for further Manning Wardles? Class M (Isle of Wight Railway 'Bembridge') or Class L (North Sunderland Railway 'Bamburgh') in particular....

Love the range to date.

Thanks! The main issue is getting a suitable RTR chassis. We do spend quite a bit of time trying to find the closest match we can. There is another industrial Manning Wardle in prototyping phase to fit the B2 chassis again. There may be more opportunities in the future with the current pace of technology!
