New layout plan

Hi,

Wonder if you could all have a look and comment on the attached plan for my new HO Canadian layout. Its bascially a continuous run with on one side an interchange yard and engine servicing facility with on the other a dead end rural branch line with a grain silo, team track etc. Behind this the continuous run consists of 2 hidden sidings. I'm limited width wise as at each end there is access required to the room its housed in (lifting sections either end). Idea is to have a continuous run with some operating scope. Thanks in advance

Yes LIJ’s plan instantly looks more realistic by not entering the loop halfway which is going to limit train lengths too ;)

The hidden connecting loop with storage sidings allows a potential longer run to the other side too if you one and a half loops to get there.
maybe add another industry in the left bottom corner accessed from the hidden sidings end so you can either switch it from a train looping the layout or a trip freight from the lower place that pushes back into the industry?

A grain silo to me suggests the Canadian prairies, such as Saskatchewan. A branch line terminal isn't going to be cramped for space, so a diamond crossing is doubtful anyway. A few spurs as long as you can make them will get the flavour more than lots of short spurs in all directions. If you think that then might be boring to operate, then bear in mind that one spur will have several industries or car spots on it - plenty of switching potential there!!

Very true. Even Lance Mindheim has said that it is not about the number of turnouts on a layout that matters. It is the number of car spots on a layout that's important.

The majority of industries don't have discrete spots, The cars can go on the track in any order.  Its also era dependent.  Older eras tended to have shorter spurs, and fewer discrete spots.  More modern eras tend to have longer spurs and more discrete spots.  Part of that was driven by the car types.  When everything is in a boxcar, a discrete spot is less important, when stuff is in covered hoppers or tank cars, contamination of the unloading lines is more of a concern.
