The far end of the layout is against a plain wall which would not look good in photos so I wanted to improve things. On a rare 2020 day out I took a few photos looking towards Exmouth standing on the estuary shore just below the railway near the first place you can cross the railway to get to the estuary east (or north) of Dawlish Warren. I then cut the photos out and stitched them together on a nice blue sky that matched the rest of the backscene using a combination of free photoshopping apps Gimp and Paint.net. This was then printed and attached to the wall at the end of the layout; it looks much better than the plain wall. At the risk of straying away from topic this is a wider view of the layout to show how the backscene on the wall fits in to become an aid to taking realistic photos. The up platform edge needs some work to smooth it off, the ballast needs tidying and I reckon those sockets need to be IP68 rated! As an aside I'm very happy with the life size totem I included in the print. It somehow creates the right atmosphere in the railway room. Unmistakable DW, only thing missing is the sound of gulls and the sea... 2 1

Popular Post Broadoak
When I built Two Sisters, which was an entry in a competition to build a layout in less than four square feet. I wanted something a bit different to the normal narrow gauge layout. I chose 1/32 scale as my eyesight is not what it once was and I had a couple of tractors made from kits in that scale. I had read about a couple of large farms in the Lincolnshire fens that used two feet gauge track to transport potatoes from the farm to a standard gauge connection. I wanted some different forms of motive power as well so I built a selection of i/c powered vehicles. This is another Chris Nevard photo and shows an ex Army gun tractor modified in the farm work shop to run on rails. Peter M 15 6

Popular Post Ben B
It's a chilly night at Spon Lane, but there's much to be done. With the demise of the old DMU carriage previously used for works trains, the management has invested in a rather more cost-effective ex-BR inspection trolley to transport their personnel around the site, and the dinky little vehicle is seen waiting for the shift-change outside 'A' shop. 24 1
Popular Post brylonscamel
A bit of monochrome fun with the harbour scene at Caledonian Basin. It's a scratch-built foreground - based on Bowling Harbour - but a bit of Metcalfeshire in the background. 9FEd
In Italy, on the Ligurian coast, an E483 heads west on a test run with a rake of XMPR Eurofima stock. In a few years, this single track section of line will become a bike path with the opening of a new double track alignment inland.
Popular Post Broadoak
Most farmers never seem to throw anything away, consequently most farm yards end up with lots old junk laying about all over the place. Two Sisters is no exception as this old horse drawn implement shows hidden under a tarpaulin. The idea being I suppose you never know when it may come in useful. Photo by Chris Nevard. Cowley 47521
Evening everyone. I’ve asked permission from my best friend Paul to post these photos of his nearly finished railway based on the missing section of the Okehampton to Plymouth route. He’s not on here so I’ll send him the link in a minute. I can’t take the credit for his work but I have done a few bits and bobs on it to help and we would have shown it by now had things been different.

Popular Post andy stroud
Here are a couple of pictures which show a class 50 hauled coal train passing through the station at Blueball Summit. In the goods loop behind the signal box, an empty clay train waits for a clear path. Some evidence of activity from the civil engineers can be glimped on the far left as a track machine and wickham trolly are stabled. An upstairs window in that cottage would make a great vantage point to just sit there and watch the trains go by. 35 7
