I have just discovered that until 1912 Class B tank wagons were red rather than black. However, the sources i have do not make it clear whether "red" meant red oxide or a bight red.

And if anyone has any ideas, I would be grateful, for suitable owners for a Class B tank wagon appearing in a South Wales mining town in 1912.

I rather suspect that the answer to the second question is that appearance of a tank wagon would be unlikely!

I suspect the red was red-oxide (either bauxite or red lead) .

The only reason I can think of for oil tanks in the Valleys is either removing coking-oven by-products, or delivering flotation oil for coal washing. I believe the latter is a relatively recent development, however.

I have decided that the (slightly) least unlikely company to have a tank wagon appear on my 1912 based Valleys layout is Homelight which had a major base in Cardiff. The livery has a white panel with the company name in large capital letters. There are two photos in the HMRS collection, both pre-1912 though neither the same design as mine. I can make my own transfers but what colour for the lettering? Any ideas? Failing any suggestions I shall go for black.
