chrisf
There were three diagrams for the DPUs in the winter 1962-63 service, based on Leamington, Stafford Road and Tyseley. They are not without complexities. For instance, each car visited Stourbridge Junction but from different directions. The Stafford Road worked in multiple with a 3-car set for part of the day and each diagram involved the haulage of loco-hauled parcels vans. I'll make sense of it if anyone likes but it will delay the next episode of Class 116! Chris

The 122 bubble car diagrams are no doubt a similar quagmire! I remember the parcels cars on the North Warks and also at Snow Hill (usually with tail loads). Presumably the fourth Tyseley car would be maintenance spare. Sorry to divert the thread a bit. Edited September 9, 2020 by MidlandRed

RMweb Gold TheSignalEngineer Posted September 9, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 9, 2020 I believe that what is shown as a PMV from Cardiff to Dudley, D70 1.25pm Wolverhampton to Hartlebury, was actually the GWR Palethorpes van. The return working went from Cardiff to Shrewsbury on a Crewe train then to Wolverhampton LL on the Shrewsbury - Paddington parcels.
sb67
I'm enjoying this thread and I've started to plan my next layout, which I would like to run a small parcels train. Does anyone know of any small depots from the 70's 80's I could have a look at for some inspiration? Many thanks.

My layout is going to be inspired by Wolverhampton Low Level which was closed to passengers then shortened and used part of the original platforms for parcels in the 1970s, the disused stations website has some good photos. A bay platform such as that at Oxford would be good for modelling parcels handling in a small space too.

There used to be a parcels depot at the end nearest the station buildings.

Chris Thanks for this - it's very interesting - am I right in thinking that D72, 2.3 pm SX Stourbridge - Stratford is likely to have travelled via the OWW (Kidderminster, Worcester, Evesham, Honeybourne) and then north to get to Stratford rather than back via Old Hill, Snow Hill, Tyseley and the North Warwicks? No, it went all stations to Rowley Regis then Snow Hill connecting with the Shrewsbury - Paddington Parcels. After Snow Hill it shunted into the yard at Tyseley before continuing to Hall Green, Shirley and Stratford. It later returned via Leamington to Snow Hill.
RMweb Gold ruggedpeak Posted September 12, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 12, 2020 Not sure if WR activity is of interest but these pics from one day in 1980's (I never kept any notes) show the GWR 150 livered 121 and DPU coming in from the London end at Reading station, I assume as a parcels train? Very modellable with units from Heljan and Kernow. 6

Bungus the Fogeyman
My take on parcels- a couple of platforms on the LBSCR side of Victoria. Still unfinished (Surprise surprise!)
