Guest Jack Benson
On our Modelling the Southern Region group, micros are becoming rather popular, Ian B's wondrous South Gallions leads the way but recent discussions about Shoreham Docks, Newhaven West Quay and the Chapel Tramway have thrown up a few ideas for a small waterside layout. A very simple design that is two modules that fit into 77ltr Christmas Tree storage boxes but carefully read the link as SMS modules are too narrow. Use any tiny loco, if inspired by Newhaven West Quay buy a Hornby A1X, whilst other suitable tiny locos for the South include - Hattons P, Dapol B4, Hornby W4 Peckett, Bachmann 03. The bigger USA tank, R&H and 03 need careful thought as the cassette is just long enough for W4 +3 swb wagons. johnd
Another small loco to use would be the Hornby R&H48ds! especially if using electrofrog points the flat waggon supplied is not required. Edited August 13, 2020 by johnd
Guest Jack Benson
Anyway, two harbour images from the South, enjoy. Edited August 13, 2020 by Jack Benson Wandering off topic
johnd
Sorry you didn't get on with your R&Hs both of mine perform faultlessly!
Guest Jack Benson
Sharing ideas can often be productive, in this case it was, thank you to Neil. The dockside has been increased to include all the frontage of the layout whilst the fiddleyard only caters for two 'trains' is tucked away behind a backscene. A small jetty will hide the join in the water. Neat innit? To be continued elsewhere Cheers and Stay Safe
Sturminster_Newton
"A very simple design that is two modules that fit into 77ltr Christmas Tree storage boxes but carefully read the link as SMS modules are too narrow." XxxxX Turn the storage box on its side then a 330wide SMS baseboard would fit BUT the layout surface can have nothing taller than 225mm which might not suit many. The most Really Useful Box suited for modellers to hide a layout module within is the 84 litre size as that is Internal: 605 x 370 x 355 mm. Might be a problem under the bed though... A photobox as produced by Tim Horn is probably the best way forward, unless you really must stow the model under a bed or on top of a cupboard.
