Three on the bench.  Original glazing and buffers removed and wire cab front handrails added.  Phoenix electric blue paint airbrushed on.

Hi Darius,

What bogies will you be using for these three locomotives, do you have the originals or is there a plan ?

Gibbo.

HI Gibbo,

Going with the originals, which I know are too long a wheelbase but they don’t look too bad IMHO.

Modified Marklin pantographs will replace the Trix ones and SE Finecast glazing will be added to the cabs.

Still pondering the livery for the third AL1.

Cheers

Hi Darius,

Here is one I prepared earlier, it is electric blue with full yellow ends and white cab roofs and was one of the intermediate styles between 1968 and 1970 or so. Do make sure with photographs as to what colour the buffer beams were, either red or blue and whether crests or arrows were carried as some BR Blue locomotives had crests and other electric blue locomotives had arrows.

All of my AL1's electrics have modified Hornby 86 bogies as I bought only body shells many years ago.

The white frames of the bodyside louvres are Humbrol Matt white enamel applied with the end of a cocktail stick.

You might want to wait for this to go into production later this year.

First test etch shown here, I have a second one to do, then it will be in production..

Since the first build I've worked out a way of simulating the upper arm which keeps the head horizontal. More in Judith Edge kits thread.

Whilst not as refined and accurate as Michael’s pantograph, the Marklin 7219 is not too bad.  I have a few old shiny metal ones obtained over the years that can be painted to look more the part.

The base frame will need to be scratch built but that is part of the fun.

These do look exceptionally good. I remember being impressed with the Trix AL1 when it was first introduced, (yes I am that old), although it seemed very expensive at the time. Certainly worth a little time and effort as you have shown.

Cheers from Oz,

Peter C.

Still need to add cab front handrails but will leave the paint to cure overnight first.

Hi Gibbo,

I used Humbrol 128 enamel “US Compass Grey” - leftover from my model aircraft hobby days.

Got lots of shades of grey in the paint stash.

Hi Gibbo,

The intention was to model them as E3001at different stages of life.

it would be odd if they were double heading but that is an unlikely scenario.

I still have to convert the SYP version to DCC.

Cheers

Painting the raised “E3001” letters using silver paint applied by the end of a cocktail stick was a boatload of fun (not).  I had to scrub off the silver and repaint the electric blue on more than one occasion.

Hi Darius,

That thought had crossed my mind, does this mean that the BR Blue one will be numbered 81 001 ?

Double heading of AL1's was a reasonably common sight on heavy Freighliner trains and similar especially between Crewe and Glasgow, the trains required two drivers as they were not fitted for multiple working as were some of the 86's and all the 87's.

Gibbo.
