Gibbo675
Hi Darius, I've taken the plunge with my spare Trix body and its another class 84 for me also. What will be 84 003 next to 84 009. Gibbo. 3
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 5, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 5, 2020 Hi Gibbo, Looking great. Thinking of making the 84 that I am building 84 003. I note from photos that it had a Stone Faiveley AMBR pantograph similar to those used on the Class 86 rather than the single arm type of the Class 81s. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 6, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2020 (edited) A bit more progress. Today’s bright sunlight highlights the 3D printing lines on the body. Fortunately in normal lighting they are not so apparent. Cheers Darius Edited December 4, 2022 by Darius43 3
cypherman
Hi Darius, Is there any way you can fill/hide those marks.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 6, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 6, 2020 Hi Cypherman, I have already given the body a sanding but the print lines are quite subtle. That is the downside of 3D printing as no matter how fine the process is the cleaning up process is so onerous it makes scratch building a better option. 47164
Looks good, and on a side note, did dc kits produce a resin and white metal /brass model of the 84 ? I ask as I have one of the latter.

RMweb Premium Michael Edge Posted September 6, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 6, 2020 Yes, I made the patterns for the DC kits 84 and 83, that's why we sometimes have etched grilles for these - but we don't have any in stock at the moment.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 7, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 7, 2020 (edited) Pantograph etc. fitted and side window frames painted. The cab window openings are larger than the Trix cab windows and so the SEF flush glazing that I have for the Trix Locos can’t be used. The windows look more akin to the Triang Hornby AL1 so I have ordered the appropriate SEF glazing kit. Also still to do is the drilling and fixing of the cab handrails. RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 8, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 8, 2020 (edited) Handrails and buffer beam details added. Decals on. Just waiting for the cab glazing and some light weathering. Cheers Darius Edited December 4, 2022 by Darius43 3 2
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 8, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 8, 2020 (edited) Calling this finished. Cab glazing installed and chassis weathered. Cheers Darius Edited December 4, 2022 by Darius43 6

Gibbo675
Hi Darius, Here are three of my class 83 along with the photograph I used for the roof detail if any of it helps: Gibbo. 4 1
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 8, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 8, 2020 (edited) Thanks for the roof pics Gibbo - absolutely invaluable. I have sanded off the incompletely moulded bodyside grilles and filled the blow holes around the windows. I will be using your plasticard grille technique to fabricate replacements. Cheers Darius Hi Darius, I used a junior hack saw blade for the horizontal grilles and a razor saw for the vertical grille as they are finer grilles. Cheers Darius Hi Darius, From photographs I have there are two circular vents on the roof and they seem to scale at 16-17mm diameter. There is a good one on page 79 of "British Rail Main Line Electric Locomotives". Gibbo.
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 9, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 9, 2020 Thanks Gibbo. I’ll remove the spurious resin lump near the air tanks and add the second vent. I used some spare 1:48 Phantom exhaust nozzle parts from my model aircraft spares stash to make the vent. Cheers Darius
RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 10, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2020 (edited) Second circular vent thingy installed. Cheers Darius Edited December 4, 2022 by Darius43

RMweb Gold Darius43 Posted September 11, 2020 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 11, 2020 Thanks James, I am really enjoying building up an 81 to 87 collection. I have a Class 82 somewhere that I built using a resin body that I found on eBay. Must dig that out for a new line up when the 83 is completed.
