kevpeo
The latest Furness MRC layout. It's been in the planning stage for a couple of years, but we have finally started cutting plywood - It's in O gauge; set in 1984, Lochmaben was/is on the closed route between Dumfries and Lockerbie. But as far as the railway goes there is very little evidence left in the town itself! As you can see, the layout will be circular, 18.5 feet in diameter with 12 baseboards, six scenic and six fiddle yard. We are trying to follow the prototype as closely as we can, but van size dictates some compromises on the goods yard, although we can assume some rationalisation would have taken place through the 70's anyway! The first two boards are now assembled, with a third well on its way - These three will be the 'embankment' side of the layout, with the other three scenic boards being mostly the yard and station. OzzyO has been doing most of the research for this, but has come up with remarkably few photo's of the railway as was. If anybody knows of any useful views online or in books please feel free to 'chip in'. Kev. Edited April 2, 2022 by kevpeo photo's
kevpeo
A milestone has been reached. All 12 baseboards have now been assembled, the last nine of much simpler construction. The crossmembers - and attached to the trackbed - The sides going on - The finished underside - Ready for a clean up and alignment dowels to be fitted. Then the fun starts! Kev. kevpeo
all twelve boards are dowelled, time to pass them on to the track-laying gang now! Edited April 2, 2022 by kevpeo loss of photo's

The school backed onto the old railway line. The Lockerbie line is certainly the (extremely) poor relation when it comes to coverage of the lines radiating from Dumfries! There was an article by Stanley Jenkins in Steam Days (Feb 2019) entitled “Steam Days at Dumfries”, there’s a couple of columns worth about the ‘Dumfries, Lochmaben & Lockerbie Jn Rlwy. (It has one of the very few photos I’ve seen of Locharbriggs Station) but no photos of Lochmaben. I did pose a similar question over on the ‘Railways of Scotland’ sub forum quite some time ago as I was interested in finding out about the branch and Locharbriggs Station but if I recall there was very little info about books / photos etc available. Good Luck to Ozzy O with the research and the rest of the team. I look forward to seeing what you do. 1
ozzyo
Some of us track laying gang have got some bits of work done. Come on Kev give us one of your updates.
kevpeo
What, your dodgy sleeper laying? Go on then - as you can see, now we have been able to attend the clubrooms again the whole layout has been set up and levelled for the first time. Its big! The first of the cork trackbed is down as well as some of the Templot plans. And Ozzy instantly started sticking sleepers down! This is the platform area as the track appears from beneath the road bridge. Kev. Edited April 2, 2022 by kevpeo photo's
ozzyo
Hello Banger Blue, The only photo that I've found of Locharbriggs station. I do like the look of the bridge sides. We have this bridge not quite as nice to me. OzzyO. Edited June 15, 2021 by ozzyo to add photo.
kevpeo
Some more progress, two fiddle yard boards have had the copperclads pinned down loosely onto the templot plans. These will be lifted to remove the paper after the rails are fitted. Edited April 2, 2022 by kevpeo loss of photo's
kevpeo
and there was more! But then the photo's vanished! Edited April 2, 2022 by kevpeo loss of photo's 3
ozzyo
About time you put an update up. (Hard) Hat on and out of the door, OzzyO. Edited February 18, 2022 by ozzyo
kevpeo
After a lull in activity while other layouts took center stage, we have now a month to crack on with Lochmaben! The first image show three of the fiddle yard boards set up with the current limit of track laying. this should extend a fair bit shortly! In the background is the rest of this end of the fiddle yard on which Rick is adding ti-bars and check rails. With a wagon! I'll have to get a photo of OzzyO's progress too at some point! Kev.
kevpeo
And OzzyO's progress - He's arrived at the first point! After this next track joint is split its onto the last scenic board, but of course these are the slowest two to finish! Kev
ozzyo
Hello all, using these could have something to do do with slowing me down even more. The checkrail chairs and the switch chairs both of which came from Off the Rails. A close up of the switch chairs yes you do have the keys to fit as well, and they are tapered as is the prototype. The chairs for the crossing nose (common crossing), I can see a bit of fun with these as these are made for a 1:6 crossing with a 1.02mm check rail gap, and we are using a 1:8 crossing and a 1.5mm check rail gap. So a bit of cutting and shutting should work! Back to Kev ATB OzzyO. 1
kevpeo
The first train! Whoop whoop!
kevpeo
Trackwork marches on! It may look like the photo above, but look closer, the first board in the earlier photo is finished and gone! And in its place at the other end is the last fiddle yard board, this one - With a pair of curved threeway points to build. Good luck Rick!
kevpeo
I should of kept my gob shut, turns out i’ve got the job of building the tandem 3-ways! Ongoing-
ozzyo
What no updates yet! See you on Monday, OzzyO.
kevpeo
Well, our luck has run out, and we have been kicked out to make way for Swiss Pass again! Rick has managed to get his half of the fiddle yard cleaned up, gapped and electrically tested - I have been shoved into a corner with one baseboard to work on! Finally all the fiddle yard rail is now down, tie bar holes on this board now drilled and tie bar fitting and gapping ongoing. Photo taken from inside Swiss Pass! Ozzy is still cracking on at a glacial pace in his ''cubby ole'', he's nearly got a point finished! Infact, I think he did actually finish that one after I took the picture!
ozzyo
Nothing wrong with my padded cell, I think that you should come and have a look on Wednesday night and see what you have missed since you took that old photo. Nice to see you doing an up date for a change. OzzyO.
kevpeo
After a few weeks off playing on the real railway I went up the clubrooms last night to check on progress. OzzyO has got this far with his pointwork, and is now working on the yard trackwork The fiddle yard crew are on with the wiring up of baseboards, four down and two ongoing for the traction dcc ''bus'' and feeds, as can be seen here - The ''kettle'' connectors will run right round the layout for traction current for minimum voltage drop as its all mains rated wires, droppers to the track sections will be lighter rated wires. We still need to add mains supplies and some 25 way dins across some board joints for signals and accessories. Kev.
kevpeo
And continuing the wiring theme, mains and dcc “gadgets” going in!
kevpeo
OzzyO has finished off his point-work, bar the fine detailing- and has now swapped the next baseboard in. This shows how little track remains to be laid - just a few gaps now!
