SimonBoulton
I’m hoping someone might be able to help me, does anyone have an idea when the ends started to be painted partly yellow on the SP45’s? I’ve seen pics showing them from the early 90’s but wonder if they go back earlier than that? many thanks, simon
EddieB
Unfortunately I didn’t visit Poland during the late ‘eighties, but can confirm the small panels were applied by 1991.

EddieB
One hundred and ninety-one of the SP45 class (out of 268 originally) were fitted with ETH (replacing steam heating) and reclassified as "universal" locomotives (SU45) between 1987 and 1998. Unconverted locomotives were withdrawn and SP45 became extinct in 1999. Certainly by the latter date the yellow panels had become widespread. Perhaps worth noting that some also had white window surrounds.
SimonBoulton
I managed to discover that the loco's with the electric train heating were only renumbered as SU45's from 1992 onwards.
SimonBoulton
Earliest pic I’ve seen with the yellow front section so far is 1990
4-TC
The yellow paint was introduced in 1988. But there are enough photos at Flickr, where you can still find some SP45 and ST43 without yellow paint in 1989. The reason for the yellow livery was allegedly accidents with Russian tanks, so the livery was introduced to improve visibility. https://www.flickr.com/photos/scenicrail/49657864208/in/faves-141267819@N08/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/127988932@N03/15416001619/in/faves-141267819@N08/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/scenicrail/6550976137/in/faves-141267819@N08/ Stefan
