jhock
Hi, I have been looking for a little inspiration for a small modern image German HO layout I am trying to plan, I have been doing some google image searches but my German is not great and google translate is not always perfect. I have searched a few terms, Nebhebahn, localbahn, privatbahn. What I am looking for is some images of small industrial settings. Can anyone advise what I should be searching? RMweb Premium Simon Lee Posted September 1, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 1, 2020 (edited) Try "Industriebahn" "Werkbahn" as a start, then Industriebahn with any major city name, ie Hamburg, Frankfurt, Köln, etc, etc. Should throw up some results that will be helpful for you. jhock
Thanks Simon, I had a look at Hamburg, one the few places Google Street view seems to work for Germany, the docks area is a bit of goldmine for inspiration.
rekoboy
It might be best to go straight to www.google.de and use the 'Bilder' option (images) and then type in Industriebahn, Werkbahn, Werkbahnlok (works' loco) etc. I have attached screenshots to help you. Using google.de will produce some good photos - Industriebahn Ludwigsburg is a good one to go for, as is Industriebahn Halle, which was metre gauge and employed transport bogies for standard-gauge wagons
-RF-
I would like to point you Leipzig-Plagwitz: https://www.google.de/maps/@51.3139696,12.3140427,1281a,35y,39.12t/data=!3m1!1e3 (just ask Google for some more pictures) Also have look at Frankfurt and just follow this piece of track in both directions: https://www.google.de/maps/@50.1081769,8.7007734,88m/data=!3m1!1e3 and you will find a railway line in the middle of the road.

Taigatrommel
This location is somewhat lovely... Bharat Forge, Ennepetal (https://goo.gl/maps/eSLEeubnNHvdthiC7). There's even a periodic Schienenbus run down the "Talbahn". There are a few industries down the line, generally steel and scrap. This is on the same line, at Gevelsberg (https://goo.gl/maps/DuaytZcULb9YmTp49): Moving to the other side of Germany, Köttewitz has a curious set up. A steep spur off the Müglitztalbahn leads to a set of exchange sidings (https://goo.gl/maps/qkmtAjkE1ShN3hVC9) where DB traction hands over to a road-rail Unimog. Have a watch: While small wagonload operations are less common than they once were, they do still exist. Unfortunately the ones I know off I've either been tipped off about or found by chance. As any come to mind I'll try and remember to post them here. As we're posting layouts as well as the prototype, here's my last one, a paper mill and coal merchants adding wagonload interest: https://www.flickr.com/photos/richardself/albums/72157713462008742
Taigatrommel
If you feel like something a bit different, there are still fireless steam locos in service. Here's two examples.
rekoboy
My absolute favourite - the metre-gauge Industriebahn in the suburbs of Halle an der Saale. The standard-gauge wagons (just a couple a day) were transported on Rollböcke to various factories. I lived round the corner from it in the Lutherstraße for three years and was fascinated by it. Sadly gone. Edited September 12, 2020 by rekoboy
RMweb Premium readingtype Posted September 13, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 13, 2020 (edited) I think this video may already have had an airing elsewhere in this forum, but I like it. It's a special (the last I would guess) along the Industriebahn in the Stuttgart suburb of Feuerbach. You can watch the Eisenbahnfreunde rushing about trying to work out where to go next to get a picture before the traffic lights change! There's another useful video showing a 365(?) delivering two two-axle tank wagons that's also on YouTube somewhere. The Feuerbach network has inspired me, and I'm going to base at least one of the buildings on my current FREMO station module on one of the factories it served. The system was pretty substantial in its heyday and includes all sorts of interesting switchbacks etc. Almost all of it ran on roads, and it crossed a dual carriageway and a tram route seemingly just for the fun of doing it all again at the next intersection to come back the other way. I think that the city of Stuttgart got fed up of the additional cost of doing work of any kind on the roads. It is a place with a complex relationship with trains as far as I can tell :-) Ben Edited September 13, 2020 by readingtype Embedding video is too easy for me to get it right :-)
