RMweb Premium Ray H Posted September 4, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted September 4, 2020 We have several NCE PowerCabs at our club. At least one has developed a mind of its own when the "speed wheel" is moved back or forth with the speed setting figure shown on the display going up or down but not necessarily related to the speed wheel movement. I had a look at the circuit board last night and think there must be a special part involved in correcting the fault as it doesn't look like a variable resistor that I've seen before. Are NCE the only source of this part?
RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted September 4, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 4, 2020 Try Digitrains - they've done one for me but I don't think its a big job and can be DIY
RMweb Gold RedgateModels Posted September 4, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 4, 2020 Last one (well two actually, I have a spare for future use) I got from John at Bromsgrove Models. He's retired now but is still on here ..
RMweb Premium Ray H Posted September 4, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 4, 2020 Thanks chaps. As far as I can see it only entails three connections to remove & replace it. We've definitely got one throttle that is all but unusable (with the wheel) and another is showing slight signs of a similar problem.

I think it's a rotary encoder. Lots of hits (inluding RMWeb) if you google 'nce power cab encoder replacement', e.g. https://www.coastaldcc.co.uk/products/nce/spares/
RMweb Premium Ray H Posted September 6, 2020 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted September 6, 2020 Many thanks for that. I couldn't see a way of removing the thumb wheel from the encoder when I looked at the one at club. I there a knack to it?
dasatcopthorne
Easy to replace. Remove circuit board and turn it over. You need to un solder three pins that hold the encoder in. Then the thumb wheel pulls off. I keep a spare in stock. Try RS Components code # 692-8465 Done 3 so far.
