Popular Post kirtleypete
I delivered the waterworks and coal depot models this morning and picked up the first of the parts for the overall roof: The detail is incredible, and it's all been designed to slot together. I claim no credit at all for any of this, all I'm going to do is assemble it. My customer stuck on an overlay to see how it would look. I think the pictures speak for themselves. These parts will anchor the ends of the girders to the brick walls. There was one thing I thought was a bit lacking, the plain wrapping, so I've designed a better box lid: Peter 16
RMweb Gold john new Posted December 22, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 22, 2020 Are you going with the current straight slats on the ends or the older wooden one’s it still had in the fifties? I only ask as your box picture is the modern set. I can’t remember the year they got swapped over but it was fairly recent. The last of the old style were (are?) over the roof end linking the station buildings to the hotel where the short stay car park is now by the Scarborough side bays.
Popular Post kirtleypete
The box is just a joke - the roof will look as it did in the 50's. The buildings I delivered this morning are now in position, although the water tank needs bedding in: The L shaped building that stood in front of the retaining wall had gone by 1947, presumably a casualty of the bombing raid. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted December 22, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 22, 2020 (edited) Can I ask who did the parts for the overall roof, Peter? They do look excellent pieces and hope they go together well. Edited December 22, 2020 by Rowsley17D
kirtleypete
I don't know Jonathan, my customer has dealt with all that side of things. We were going to use York Modelmaking but it was getting very expensive so we decided to look elsewhere. The chap who did the drawing has far more skill that me, I could never have produced those parts. Peter 1
RMweb Premium coronach Posted December 29, 2020 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 29, 2020 (edited) This new publication from NERA is a superb book and I suggest essential reading for this project. kirtleypete
We have decided to put the station roof on hold until the Covid restrictions are eased, and in the meantime I'm going to build the coaling tower and concrete water tower at the loco shed. We have pictures of them in the background, but does anyone have clear pictures or drawings of the structures, particularly the coaling tower mechanism? RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 4, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 4, 2021 I no expert on things LNER but York's tower appears like the one at Doncaster and there's a good photo of the wagon hoist side here: https://twitter.com/SalopianLyne/status/1232778621460283392/photo/1

kirtleypete
Working on just three not very clear pictures where it is in the background I have built the concrete water tower, built by the NER in 1904. It does stand straight, honest! It needs cleaning up and few gaps filling and then I'll spray paint it in grey before the final finishing. kirtleypete
I decided to brush paint it - spray painting means going outside! I'll do the weathering tomorrow when it's all hardened off. Peter
kirtleypete
I've begun building the coaling tower, another structure that only appears in the background of pictures. All coaling towers are similar, of course, but far from identical. Apart from cleaning up I can't do much more until a delivery of Plastruct arrives, hopefully tomorrow. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 11, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 11, 2021 It certainly reflects the bulk of the original.
kirtleypete
The Plastruct has arrived so I've been able to make a start on the girders above the concrete section. With just two not very clear pictures, though, it's been a frustrating exercise so far. The small building on top houses the electric winch which pulls up the wagon hoist. Michael Hodgson
Perhaps apocryphal but I seem to recall reading somewhere that the bloke whose job it was to maintain all those "Cenotaph" coaling tower hoists had to travel away from home most of the time and had a wife in every large railway town in the country.
kirtleypete
The model is nearly ready for painting, but I've got the ladders and platforms on order so need to wait for them to arrive. kirtleypete
The laser cut platforms arrived so I've added them and sprayed the whole structure in grey primer. Peter 13
Popular Post kirtleypete
Some pictures of the painted structures. I've given the water tower a coat of concrete paint ready for weathering tomorrow. I've weathered the coaling tower up to the top of the concrete, the top part will be done tomorrow. I painted the hut housing the winding machinery in LNER cream and green as I doubt if it would have been first in line for a repaint in the 1950's. The steelwork is grey for the same reason, although it will be heavily weathered. The tower was painted with Railmatch concrete, put on so that the grey showed through in places, and then it was dry brushed with weathered black. My customer is going to add the rails as I haven't any 4mm scale track here. The coal is Woodland Scenics lump coal, and I'm hoping the PVA it is soaked in will dry overnight. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 15, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 15, 2021 Cannot wait to see it on the layout, but I guess that could be some time away under current circumstances.
Popular Post kirtleypete
Sadly it's all being delayed; I'm doing these models because they are small enough to post, unlike the overall roof! The ladders have arrived so the coal tower is finished apart from the bottom of the hoppers, which I'll add tomorrow when the coal is properly dry. RMweb Gold Rowsley17D Posted January 16, 2021 RMweb Gold Share Posted January 16, 2021 Great stuff. Perhaps you can persuade your customer to take some photos and email them to you.
Popular Post kirtleypete
While work on the station is paused, laying out the track for the North loco shed has been progressing. It's a relief to know the loco's fit under the coaling tower! Peter
