RMweb Premium Neil Posted May 2, 2021 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 2, 2021 The roof sections look mightily impressive. Can I ask if the glazed sections will cover the entire roof or just a portion of the ends? I can see why you might want to have a less obscured view for the majority of the covered area but it would equally be a shame not to have the glazing continue for the full length. kirtleypete
There will only be glazing at the ends to allow the interior to be seen; with full glazing it would be pretty much hidden and an awful lot of work is going into it! The idea is that looking from the ends it will appear as though there is full glazing, especially from track level. Peter 4
Popular Post kirtleypete
I've got to they stage when all four roof sections are clad and I'm fitting the walkways. To make sure they line up I've put three sections together on my bench in the garden. The end ones are done, and the middle on has been left alone until now. I have added the ends of the walkways on the middle section, which can then be taken inside to fill in the gaps. The walkway that crosses the roof has also been finished off. The two remaining sections have been sprayed with grey primer followed by a coat of dark grey. I'll leave this to harden off until tomorrow and then I can finish them off while the paint on the middle section dries. The end section then needs the glazing on the top to be added, the last job on this part. Peter. 28 10
Popular Post kirtleypete
The last roof section I am doing had a ladder up the side to give access to the walkways from the roof of the station buildings. The blokes that worked up there must have been fit! I'll paint this part tomorrow, it's raining again and I have to do it outside. Popular Post kirtleypete
I've begun adding the glazing to the end section, but first I put on the slates along the sides: These pieces were just to see if what I'd planned was going to work. They are cut from 2mm plastic sheet. The triangular pieces have been glued in position. The glazed parts slope away from the centre and with the roof curved in two planes it makes an interesting challenge! I should finish and paint them tomorrow. We're only glazing four bays, after that it's going to be left open. Peter 22

kirtleypete
Wow! That picture is new to me - brilliant! I need to add half round strip along the centre line, which fortunately will be easy to do. May as well get it right! I'd better add that crack in the pane of glass too........... I love the idea of safely at work - flat caps all round unless you're the foreman! Peter Edited May 7, 2021 by kirtleypete

The fall, not enough time to bleed out in only a 100 ft fall, 2.5 seconds for the fall, about 5 mins to bleed out from an artery

Popular Post kirtleypete
My customer has been busy while I've been working on the roof; he has finished off the platforms, and has drilled the holes for the canopy supports outside the overall roof. The columns have been 3D printed, but the ones in the picture are being replaced by new ones the right height (!) and with the brackets incorporated. The positions of the holes were marked out on a sheet of Perspex which was laid over the platform surface for drilling. This allows all the marking to be done without damaging the platform - clever stuff. Peter 21

I think this is the roof barrel over the main concourse and the internal station buildings, so is likley to be from one for the buildings, possibly from the orginal signal box at the end of the footbridge. Jaggzuk
Not sure how many of the cantilever signal gantries you intend to add, but adjacent to the main gantries at the northern end there were two large water pipes suspended from the roof over the tracks to supply water for steam locomotive tenders. There were located next to the current Gents toilets on Plat 3/4 and at the north end of Plat 5. These actual lasted in place till the late 60s, early 70s
kirtleypete
The signals will be colour lights, and there are an awful lot of them! Not my department I'm pleased to say. You're right about the pipes though, it's a good point that I hadn't thought of. Has anyone got a picture of them? Peter
Popular Post kirtleypete
I've done the artwork for the NER valence on the canopies outside the overall roof; although we're not intending to build them yet I like to have the parts I need ready in good time. They will be laser cut in white plastic. Meanwhile I've finished the glazing on the end roof and have begun weathering it. I need to do the inside but not until this is fully dry. The centre glazing is wider as on the real thing. We just need some chaps with brushes and buckets to wash them now! Peter 21 12

Popular Post kirtleypete
The roof is about complete and will be delivered tomorrow to put in place. The walkways had to be made in a series of straight sections, but most of the time the roof will be viewed from the side and it's much less obvious from that angle. I'll adjust the places where they don't meet perfectly tomorrow with the roof in place on the columns. Peter 22 20

kirtleypete
Each section is 750mm wide and 500mm long, so the whole thing is 2m long. That's not full size, the model has been reduced! Peter 1 1
